Hi I'm adopting a 4yr old male Parrotlet tomorrow(7-28-07) If anyone has any advice That would be a great help!!! I have 2 Lovebirds & a Lineolated Parakeet so I do know how to care for birds. My 2 Lovies were not tame either when I got them & they now fly to me to sit by me when I'm on the computer!! But ANY words of wisdom that comes from owning a Parrotlet would be a great help!!! Please & Thanks....

hi and welcome to the forum, and its great that your taking on an older bird. you say hes untame has he never been handled or is he a breeders bird. if you trained budgies or linnies i would do the same with the parrotlet i would think its going to take some time but you never know :)

keep us updated on how you are getting on with this bird

Hours and hours of calm "shoulder" time :). I have a four year old hen who was hand-raised, but became very much "untamed", due to forming a mate bond. Sadly, her mate was killed, but the good news is that she became re-socialized with humans. Being already mature, and hating people, I (unfairly) felt that there was little chance she would become human-friendly again. But I was wrong! My belief is that an investment in a goodly amount of time being on and around calm, comfortable people will tame even a mature parrot.

Good luck, and best wishes with your little boy!!

PS: Some folks report that male Parrotlets express more personality and affection than hens do. I am absolutely not an expert, but, from my personal experiences, I think this is likely true. :)

Hi everyone!! No he wasn't a breeder. He just wasn't handled. I go pick him up at 1 & its about an hour drive. I think the owner now just didn't have timefor him. She said she has 6 other birds! She did clip his wings for me(I know how but I didnt want him to fear me right away.) She says he never bites when held. But to get him out of the cage she puts a washcloth over him & traps him to get him out!?!? I've never done this?!? Has anyone else?? Thanks to everyone who welcomed me & gave me advice already!!

I've decided to name him Zeke. I was :o shocked at how small he is!!! He is half the size of my Lovebirds!! When researching Parrotlets & looking at pics they looked the same size even bigger!! Is he maybe underweight?? Or my Lovebirds fat?!? Zeke is such a doll & he loves his swing he came with!!! Oh I have a question about Lima beans... My b/f grabbed the wrong bag of veggies!! I told him carrots, corn & peas so he gets carrots, corn & lima beans... Are they safe for birds?

Yes lima beans are perfectly safe for birds! And I know what you mean about the size of lovebird vs. parrotlet! You would think the lovebird would be so much smaller..not the case! So no worries! Your lovebirds are not over weight!!! lol!

If you can get him on a scale (we use a cheap postal scale) he should be around 30 grams. He looks great

he looks great Teresa, as everyone has said parrotlets are slightly smaller than lovies so no need to worry :) and they are all very active birds and you will also be supprised by the hudge amount of food he can eat !
