Can't believe looking back at this post that I bought my UV light in June last year eek eek Where does the time go?

I have gone to set up the light a few times but always been a bit worried about the light being too close to the birds. Whenever you ask about UV lighting there never seems to be a really conclusive answer as to whether it's definitely better for the birds.

However, the birds have been in our living room recently which is a much darker room than the kitchen/dining room which is a fairly bright room. I do change where they are and they are sometimes back in the original room and sometimes upstairs while I am working .... again a pretty brightly lit room. A couple of weeks ago i got it all out again and unpacked thinking I was going to bite the bullet and install it. But the screws were missing to attach the little stand to the unit. I placed it on top of their cage and was still not sure - as I couldn't attach the stand it was difficult to get an impression of how it would work with regard to giving a choice of underneath or avoiding the light elsewhere in the cage - an important criteria for installing the lamp.

I found what I thought were the screws a few days ago but then couldn't remember where I had put them (that time of life - apparently it's a common side effect drats )

Last night I decided it was time to try it out and searched in earnest for every possible place I would have put the screws 'in a safe place' The birds keep making for the top of the lamps or light fittings and I felt fairly sure the bulbs installed in those were not ideal for them to be spending too much time above and also they keep wrecking the shade on the one lamp.

Well I found the screws (eventually) and they seem to be the correct ones (do the job anyway!) so went about installing the light on top of their cage. I have positioned it towards the back and angled behind the cage so it gives a filtered light over the cage but directed above a perch which I have set low in the cage to give the advised distance for them to bask! Pip is looking very well feathered at the moment (for him) so I thought it might also be an added bonus (they do say it can be a help with feather plucking) as one day he can be feathering up nicely and the next.... lots of feathers on bottom of cage and back to his "woolly vest" look.

Well...........they seem to love it .......... it did upset their routine somewhat last night so it probably wasn't the most sensible time to put it on. Fern was hanging upside down looking down to the bottom of the cage (twisting her head to the side as they do so they can see below them) it really did look as if it she was seeing things differently from before. She seemed to scan the whole cage with great interest. They both seemed so excited. Both choosing to stay in their cage (doors open) rather than above the lampshades in the room! Only thing is they struggled to settle down as they probably thought it was the dawn! Bit silly of me really but I gradually reduced the light around their cage, covered them gradually too and they eventually settled down.

I have just put it on this morning and they got really excited again, Fern started bathing in her water

They have eaten like crazy and had a mad half hour but are now perched under the light, actually quietened while I sat down to write this. Pip has been preening Fern, though they have now just tucked their heads in and are asleep (don't know if that's quite right but they are both on one leg and maybe it's due to their later settle down time last night)

I will keep monitoring and let you know how it goes ...... yellow1 past1 First impressions (other than the fact that they have just gone into roost mode  ) seem good :)

It certainly does .... I thought I bought it just before Christmas   They do seem to like it though. They are a little torn between the perch which is under it and their usual high one but they do get all sweet and squidgy when they are under it

I wish I had installed it when I bought it, I am really happy with it, as we have said before you read information from the internet and sometimes negative views can put you off, often difficult to get the full story and full experience. There seems to be so much information out there but often cannot get just the info you need despite hours of searching! I had read such mixed reviews, one contradicting another. From what I have seen I really do believe it does open up their world of colour. 2.gif

Shows up their beautiful colours to us too
