I was thinking about getting an AviQuarium brooder (Avitech). It fits on top of a glass aquarium, and the price is affordable enough for me. Does anyone use or know anything about this brooder? It uses infrared, and I don't know anything about it except what I read on their website. Do you think I would do better buying a used brooder at a local bird show? I can't afford anything expensive. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!! :) _______________ |

Sorry I would have no idea. I have read though that you can just use a cardboard box or a aquarium and just add a light source on top and, you could put a brick in there and put the lamp on it and then they can cuddle up to the brick but I wouldn't advise this because they could easily get cold if they weren't near the brick. They normally use this with button quail. |

I was thinking and I remember my boss at the pet store put the new babies in a 20 gallon long aquarium. He use the screen cover for the top like a reptile was going in. He then put in the light shavings like you would use for hamsters and put a heat lamp on top for warmth. |

it should be good, its fine to make one yourself, but then you have to mess around with getting the humidity correct, along with the temps.... if its a good price, go for it |

Thanks everyone for the replies
:) I've been using a little acrylic fish tank/carrier type thing with a heating pad underneath. I kept it on low and used a kitchen towel or two between the pad and tank to control the temperature. It stays consistent, but I still worry. I was looking for something a little more "high-tech" I did find a reptile thermostat and heat pad at Petco that I was considering to use with a small glass aquarium. I'll have to check it out a little better to see exactly how it works. Actually, my last batch of babies spent their day on the porch with the other birds, since I live in central Florida and humidity and warmth are no problem! B) I just kept them in the shade, and brought them in at night and put them on the heating pad. _________________ |

a lot of reptile thermometers have humidity gages too, so that would be a plus. as for the reptile heating pad, i dont sugest you use them.... i have used them for years (when turd boy way smaller) and they get REALLY hot! even with towels down etc., they are still too hot! |
