I was just wondering what everyone uses to cover their birds at night? Our parrotlet, Daisy, is in the living room and she usually ready for bed around 8:00pm. Where I live it's still light outside at that time during the summer. Currently we are using a white cloth that is big enough to cover her cage. It's just what we had at the time without going out and buying something. I'm thinking that she isn't getting enough sleep because it's too bright. What is recomended to cover her up without suffocating her but keep it dark. (I really don't have the option to move her cage at the moment so I'm having to make due as best as I can) Thanks, Jessica |

I've never covered my birds. Cricket goes to bed in his little tent every night at the same time…lol… :) And the big guys go to bed at 9:30. |

This winter I did cover them with a dark colored sheet but normally I don't cover my birds. |

So should I not cover her at all? She hates it when I cover her up but I guess I just thought it's what you're suppose to do. She doesn't have a tent ... just a corner cozy thing. It wouldn't get drafty if I left her uncovered? Do they mind if it's bright? |

I think it's up to the bird owners. I only covered mine because I moved to a new place and thought they may be frightened until they got used to the place. Covering is good because you can better control their sleeping. Mine hate being covered too. |

I don’t cover mine because the lights go out at 9:15 and they pretty much settle down on their own. Like Bonnie said I think it’s up to the individual. Also, I know people that cover their birds only because they wake up too early in the morning, especially during the summer. ;) |

The conures i cover with a quilt... one side is a dark blue, the other a pretty design. I cover the p'lets & grass keets with a light sheet, pretty much to keep any cats from spooking them at night. |

I used to have a canary and I would cover his cage just to make sure he was warm enough at night and to keep him quiet early in the morning. I cover my p'let, Pippi, now because that was what I was used to. I don't use my heat much in the winter and I was afraid that she would get cold. Now I guess I do it so she has privacy. |

i cover all of mine each night the budgies have a big green throw, bubble and squeak have a red throw and sugar and spice have a large towel. i never covered the budgies when i first had them and found that they would still be awake at 11pm at night which i thought they were not getting enough sleep . their cages are in the same room as the tv and computer so i now cover them up, the parrotlets want to go to sleep anytime after 6.30 and the budgies are normally ready at about 7.30. soooo every one gets covered at 7.30pm, i find this works best for them and me. they are being woke up at 6.30am which is why they seem to go to bed so early. hope this helps kev |

Thanks for all the great advice everyone. She does go to sleep around 8:00 and that's what time I cover her but sometimes I don't cover until 8:30 or 9:00 and she seems to sleep just fine in that time. I think I will continue to cover her for now. My in-laws live with us so 6 people coming & going in one house can get kinda crazy with everyone going to work in the morning. Everyone is very quiet but a kitchen light may come on so I think the cover will be better for now. Once it's just us (2 people + critters) then she may like it without her cover. Thanks again! |

Yes I think it's best for your situation right now. I live down stairs all by myself and soon when the door goes in I can control how dark the room stays. Mine seem to have little clocks in their heads , they go to sleep at 8 pm dark or light and I wake them up around 7 or 8 am every morning. |
