Really excited as Steve at Rosemead Aviaires has agreed to build me an aluminium Parrotlet cage to my specifications. I have many beautiful cages but they are all a bit cumbersome to move around and certainly not easy to clean in all the nooks and crannies or repositioning the toys.
This is what I asked for:-
The gaps must be no larger than 1/2".
The cage to have two sets of double doors (one set at the top, one set at the bottom) which latch securely together and are the full width of the front of the cage. This means that when all four doors are opened, there is only one horizontal bar obstructing my access at the half way point. This is for optimal cleaning, positioning toys and other cage
accessories.

36"L x 24"W x 63"H (that's 48inch high with 15inches for legs and castors)

Obviously this design is not good for a youngster in training, with the fully opening front and the size would be unsettling. So all the other cages will be put to good use as he tames and grows in confidence. These cages are not aesthetically pleasing but are functional and with the amount of gadgets and gizmo's I will be attaching to the outside to make it a giant playground I doubt the actual cage will be visible

My goodness Berni it sounds like a birdie castle?

Can't wait to see pics when it's done. Is it really expensive to have a custom built cage?

No not at all. I couldn't believe the price £255 that includes delivery. Mind you if I totted up all the cages I'm nearly at the £1000 mark but at least I have cages in most rooms which will stop me letting this little lad have the run of the house and another accident occurring. I'm going to be far more sensible and go for 'quality' out of cage time rather than 'quantity'. :)

I can't see many people liking the Aluminium cage it's not as pretty and unobtrusive as our Montana ones but I will attempt to make it country casual looking rather than industrial city scape
My little lad is not even a twinkle in his daddy's eye yet. Hoping for second half of June but Mother Nature may want me to plan around her schedule so it may be earlier or later. I would love to get two as nothing is better than seeing them interact with each other but I have to consider the amount of travelling around I do. Great if they come with a life time guarantee of compatibility but they don't and having two carriers, two travel cages etc would be a nightmare. My ideal would be to talk a family member into having one so they could have 'play dates' in a neutral area :)

Steve is doing me up a drawing which he's sending out tomorrow but has asked me what sort of mesh I wanted. So had to do some hasty research as I know diddly squat about these things. I replied Stainless Steel mesh, 1/2inch x1inch rectangle lattice, 14 gauge (which I think is 2mm thick as they are Hookbills). I'm also double checking what the floor is made of.
Hope I haven't upset him by stating 'no small barbs or nicks in the joints to snag feet'.
Find it a bit strange that he gives me the price without checking on the mesh first as Stainless Steel is expensive, the smaller the lattice and thicker the gauge also has price implications. Oh well! I await his drawing and reply with fingers crossed. :)

This is the drawing.......bless him obviously not an architect as this is meant to show a flat roof

Anyway things have changed since my long conversation with Steve on the phone. I'm increasing the size so it will now be 4ft width x 2ft deep x 4ft high living space with an additional 15" for legs and castors (overall hight 5ft 3"). No longer four doors now two so the front opens completely like a wardrobe. The floor base is Aluminium as is the structure.
Now comes the tricky bit as I was set on 14 gauge rectangle mesh, yes I now realise that was a bit over the top and a 16 gauge will be more than adequate for any medium sized Hookbill but I've wavered on the Stainless steel mesh which I pray I don't live to regret. Apparently the mesh used is Pre-Galvanized and this is what is used to update the aviaries in bird parks and Zoo's which they have been supplying for eight years. I was still a bit sceptical and pointed out that eight years is not long enough to determine toxicity. We then went into depth on the difference between galvanised and pre-galvanised, powder coated and everything in-between.
We did manage to stop butting heads long enough for a bit of a laugh, when he asked if I had actually seen what he builds or if I know anyone with one of his cages. I found out he is the supplier for Think Parrot shows (as well as others) and Stef had his birds displayed in one of Steve's aviaries last year. The tension between us dispelled when I said "well if your aviaries are good enough for Stefano they'll be good enough for me cos he's a fussy bugger when it comes to his birds"
The price is slightly more due to the size increase £280 which I think is fabulous for the amount of living space 2.gif

Yes he told me you had 3/4 inch mesh on that aviary and the birds were fine but I'm sticking to the 1/2x1inch lattice as your birds being in it for a day is different from it being a full time home, where they are left alone at times and could get up to mischief trying to poke their heads though eek What did you think of that aviary Stef? any bits you think could be improved i.e. joins, latches, mesh or anything else.
