Just wanted to share. I purchased one of these back in May, they are brilliant for keeping an eye on both temperature and humidity and will tell you how low/high it has got since you last checked. Nice and portable too.
Apparently we are in for the worse winter in a hundred years eek

:) great minds think alike, I have just been looking at heaters, love those wall mounted Avi-Temp infrared heat panels that just look like a framed picture behind the cage but can't find a UK outlet. Like you I'm not sure if it would be a good idea. If he is too cosy indoors I won't be able to take him visiting. I might just look at ways to keep above the 40 F = 4.444 C which is the lowest Sandee Molenda has mentioned:-
'As far as room temperature goes, most adult parrotlets (and even youngsters who have been acclimated) are perfectly content in the same temperature as people. Generally speaking 60-80 degrees are ideal; however, most people don’t realize that they can withstand much lower temperatures. Its actually heat that is a problem – anything above 85 degrees can be dangerous. It has been my experience that anything below 60 degrees stops them from breeding but pet birds can easily withstand much lower temperatures. In fact, I know people that keep them outdoors, once they are acclimated, in places where the temperature drops to as low as 40. So long as they have shelter, are protected from strong drafts and have lots of food to keep their energy up, especially foods high in fat, they are just fine. So, a pet parrotlet kept in a home will certainly be safe and happy in the same temperatures that you and your family enjoy.'

Only problem is if you heat the house during the day and heating goes off during the night. We are all wrapped in our duvets! In the past we have used a tube heater under the cage which is quite effective. I haven't heard about it being the worst winter in a hundred years. Is that what we have to suffer for a decent summer eek

This is the report:-
Forecasters last night warned the entire country is set for a horror freeze which will bring brutal winds and fierce blizzards.

Temperatures have already started to plunge as a swathe of cold air from the Arctic has swept across the UK in the past few days.

The first long-range forecasts warn of "recordbreaking snowfall" next month.

Heavy wintry showers are expected to cause widespread chaos with below-average temperatures possibly lingering until February.

Long-range forecasters blamed the position of a fast-flowing band of air known as the jet stream near to Britain and high pressure for the extreme conditions. Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said: 'We are looking at a potentially paralysing winter, the worst for decades, which could at times grind the nation to a halt.

Think Olly and I will draw a line under our woodland foraging until March if this does materialise

Funny you started the topic, I was looking at keeping Donny warm now we moved to a house as it is a bit colder than the flat. Normally I wrap him (well... his cage) up with fleece blanket on top of his usual black cage cover or use fleecy hot water bottle for colder nights. But now I have found something that I thought would be great. The question is whether Donny will like it. We got him little fleecy tent/hut but he just would not go in.
What do you think of this:
http://www.amazon.com/K-H-Thermo-Perch-Small/dp/B000795ZE0

I could not find one in the UK, but I got one from Germany and hopefully it will arrive in couple of weeks.

Berni, with the winter report, you made me worry a bit because with the house we got a small pond with 3 fish, what am I going to do with them?!?! I will need to ask my other half whether we will really use the bath in the winter or whether we put fish there instead for few months.

wow! that perch looks/sounds great, I,m going to have to get my hands on that. As for the fish pond it depends how small, if its nice and deep and you place a kids foot ball on the surface to keep an air hole for safe evaporation of toxic gases (the ball should prevent the whole lot freezing over) then they should be ok. I'm sure there are more modern ways of keeping an air hole but this is how we did it 40yrs ago. I know some people used to stick a saucepan of boiling water on the ice every morning to melt a hole, obviously you cant bang the ice to crack it as the vibration upsets the fish. Moving the fish indoors could stress them.

Berni I hope Prince Olly appreciates all his luxuries. And that forecast sounds like a reason to leave the country eek

Matty, I have read those heated perches are really good. I might actually think about one of those

Jan we set our thermostat fairly low but heating does come on in the winter if the temperature goes too low. Brrrr.... It's a horrible thought!

I wondered about that - you would really think they would be fail safe something like that. Maybe the tube heater will do! But I have also read that the birds love them. Problem is the best time for use is at night when it gets cold and the bird is roosting and humans asleep in bed so you wouldn't be checking and bird would stay still. Though you would expect a bird to move if it got too hot
