still haven't set Olly's up as we only got back this evening. I won't be lighting the whole cage, giving Olly the choice to get out of the UV when he wants. From what I've read they seem to regulate the amount of time themselves. Also I won't be giving any D3 supplement as using Full spectrum light he should produce his own. My thinking is in the wild they wouldn't spend the whole day in direct sunlight and maybe each specie is different, plus having different needs at certain times i.e. health, moult, breeding etc So I'm just supplying it to see if he chooses to use it. So far I havent come across any definitive studies on UV lighting for Psittacines but there must be some somewhere  |

I've found 10 hours in the winter and less on a bright day... Seems to suit my birds, budgie, tiels and p'lets ok... I've fixed mine over the large cage so my tiel get most of the brightness as he is the one who it was bought for.. Hasn't stopped him plucking, but hasn't made it worse.. Be good to hear what you guy's think of it! |

In the wild they will mainly be nesting/feeding in bushery, shrubbery and Savannah (not desert but spacey spred tree land area) so even though sunshine is 8-12 hours a day (depening on season) I personally would recommend no more than 6 hours. I would put it on for 4 hours. They would not sit and bask in the sun but enjoy and play within trees and bush. :) |

Thanks for all the posts, this is interesting and there seems to be a lot of different opinions. I have this link http://www.nlpr.org.uk/education/lighting and have read quite a few books. Apparently the bulbs are not that long lasting. 4 hours a day would be the general agreement but still not sure what the placement should be so keep on posting how it goes :) We have just moved the thermostat into the living room where the cage is so we get accurate reading on room temperature so we can set the heating accordingly. also have been looking at making a baize cover, which could be supplemented, if very cold nights set in, with a padded cover over that. We are learning as we go so any suggestions on that are welcome. At the moment they have my cosy bed throw but I would like that back for me! wave |

Put Olly's UV up today. I chose the area of the cage least visited to see what he did. Straight under it and looking up directly at the bulb at this point it was about 20inchs from a perch. He left the cage to examine it more closely and seemed to want to sit ontop of the cage under it, so I moved it directly above his roosting perch. Now eight inches and he went back in his cage onto his roosting perch. As he never goes on his roosting perch except to sleep I'm presuming he likes the light. I think its too close but the cage is open and Im just observing at the moment. He only goes back to his cage for a drink when its open so its interesting to see him choose to sit under the light. I've ordered a timer and will set it for 0900hrs-1300hrs but he is usually out of the cage free flying and playing at this time if we are not out and about, so may have to rethink this. I have also ordered a Lumie Bodyclock Elite 300 to wake him with a sunrise and 'dawn chorus' and it has a sunset feature as well. I'll set this one for 0800hrs and 2000hrs. The Lumie is not a avian 'full spectrum' as it was designed for humans with SAD, but it will serve as a supplement to his purpose built avian light and be a nice gentle way to start and end his day. I will continue to monitor and no doubt Matty and I will be comparing notes as to whether this is a beneficial purchase or a 'white elephant' |

I wish I had got the mobile floor lamp one like Matty, as Olly has the Arcadia Compact UV Bird Lighting Kit and that's more restrictive as it can only be attached to the cage. With the floor lamp I could have easily arranged an out of cage spot for him to soak up the rays. Oh well more work to earn the bucks for the Prince to have another one installed  |

 I know Olly is deliberately returning to his cage to sit under it. He only chooses about five minutes then shoots off to play around the room for ten to fifteen then goes back in his cage under the light again for another five minutes. Yes already thinking a worth while purchase but will have to get a second floor standing one for the mobility. Do you think they make little sun shades and supply some sexy chica's to serve the drinks for our lads rofl Found this that you may find interesting: http://confluence.mickaboo.org/download/attachments/1179693/AvianLightingSummary.pdf?version=4&modificationDate=1327877001000 |

Very interesting article Berni It's taken about three attempts to read it - kept getting interrupted! I am going to look more seriously onto it. Shame all the recommendations for bulbs appear to be american supply. Made me smile with reference to the one bulb which contains mercury - to make sure it has a secure mounting in case of earthquake!!! A bit concerning about the UV-B light. I went on a uk site for lighting and according to this article the avian lamps for sale had too much UV-B!! More investigation needed ...... |
