I think that will always be a controversial question Butterfly. I used to feed seed for many yrs until going to work with an avian vet. He informed me that not all seed diets are bad at all but the sunflower seeds are not good for birds. They can cause fatty liver disease and showed me the damage they do. I chose to go off all seed mix but there are good quality seed feeds out there now too. Much better than 10 yrs ago. It's up to the bird owner but I will say I seen a big improvement in my birds coloring and plumage after about 6 months of changing them over. Not to mention I have very little mess on the floor anymore. |

I agree with both Bonnie and Kev....The breeder I got Cricket from swears by a small hookbill seed mix...That's what he gets! But as far as the larger parrots...(macaws, greys, cockatoos) I really don't think anything beats pellets as far as their health is concerned...do I use pellets...heck no! My two big guys would starve first!!!! They won't touch it...I've tried! So Bonnie...my hats off to you for getting you guys on pellets at an older age! :) |

Like I said there are good seed mixes out there but as Kevin also said it's the fresh diet that we get into our birds that really helps them. We could feed all seed or all pellets and with out the fresh fruits/ veges and whole grains they would not be in as good a health as they could be. Even an occasional junk treat is still a nice treat for them.
 Harrisons diet says no other food required on this diet......but do I feed other food...yuor darn right I do!! :D |
