right I know my parrolets from tracy are going to be lovely and they have new cages in the bird room all to thereselfs, but My worry is when i get any other birds should they all be kept in quantine for awhile before going into the bird room, the reason im asking is in my avairy we have the rosellas, which seem fine, I have 6 budgies that i got from two different places, they all seem ok, although one is quite old i think and sits around alot abit hunched up, but eating fine, then we had our cockatiels which we have had for 16 years and 7 years, and two new cockatiels, well sunday the old 16 yrs old was dead and so was the new cockbird? no signs of anthing although abit thin, althoug i had seen them eating, then today the 7 yrs old is sitting on floor of cage huddled, althoug i wandered if she was pineing for her old companion as she was on eggs and has come of them, what should i do, im really worried at the moment that they might have something? there are quail in there too and they seem fine too, so is it the coinstidence. my vets useless with birds, must find a new one

hi butterfly, first i would try to find a vet
second budgies dont normally sit around hunched up, so take him out and put him somewhere else. the cockatiel could just be one of those things as he was seventeen, but to louse a second cock, is odd and for the hen to have left her eggs again odd as i would think she would still try to hatch them. if any others die wrap the bodies and put in fridge NOT THE FREEZER for testing by the vet you are going to find.
you could take your own samples and send to avian bio tech Here

a list of vets is Here links on the left.

well i think panic is over, been sitting out there for ages this morning and whats happening, is the budgies are feeding fine and the male rosella leaves them alone but as soon as the cockatiels go the feed he chases them off, I had seen them pecking around the floor, but all my feeders are up on the wall/shelf. The main thing that i could observed wrong with the dead birds was they were terrible thin under those feathers, you could really feel the breast bone, there was no other signs of anything, so I have removed the remaining cockatiels into a indoor cage on there own, with plenty of food so they are tucking in, The budgie is egg bound so treating that, Have spoken to the vet down the road who surprised me with the fact that he breeds parrakeets so he was helpful and offered to come and look at all the birds, but he thinks again its the rosellas stopping them feeding, so fingers crossed!!!

Try not to feel guilty. It's sad that you lost your birds, but you didn't know.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you found the cause of it.

Im really sorry things went for a bad turn in the aviary. That saddly is the bad thing with haveing different types of birds in 1 aviary, expecially when its breeding time. My advice would be, always quarantine new birds (no matter where you get them from, it gives time for you to bond with the new bird anyway!), remove the next boxes, and only breed single pairs in a breeding cage, out of the aviary. You are able to control whos breeding with you, and doesnt give unwated stress to the other birds. I hope you eggbound hen is on the mend! how have you been treating her?

One added note: i totally agree with Kevin about getting a necropsy if another dies. A few years back I was having birds die in the aviary, by the 3rd one, I took it to my vet the morning i found it & got the results back in about 10 days, it was tainted seeds (mold spores not seen by the naked eye)

OMG that's terrible Buuz!!! the sad thing with birds is many times they give no signs of illness or by the time they do it's too late to help them.

it was awfull! I had no idea what was wrong! it turned out the was mold on the seeds. We couldnt see it & there was no way to find out where it came from. By the time we found the problem, it has been in their bodies for months. My vet said you can get a teaspoon of bad seed and it will affect bags & bags & bags!
