So my book says to cover the birds for 12 hours a day. Does it matter what they are covered with, is there any proper covers for the cage (Montana Madeira)?

Not sure if you can buy covers for the Montana Maderia
I just use duvet covers over mine in the winter and a lighter sheet in the summer! ( 'Summer'' - what summer!!!!! )

I use dark sheets in the summer, sometimes I add a light blanket or a towel if it's cold in the house. :)

As people get carried away with making their own toys, I made my own cover with 2 zips so it is made to measure. Black, so he doesnt get disturbed in our small flat.

Covering cage?! Definetely :)

Definitely cover the cage.

I usually use a large fleece throw but if that's in the wash then anything that comes to hand which is large enough and in the winter warm enough too

I use the same fleece blanket all year round.
Some will say they can get their nails caught in the fleece but Conway is going on 3
and he bites it. He doesn't get to climb on the blanket.
He sleeps from 7 - 7. Yes 12 hours is what they need.
