hello there i have read quite a few articles that say that scented candles are toxic and can potentially kill parrotlets. Is this correct? Since i have had Ica i haven't lit any in the lounge where his cage usually is. If this is true I was wondering does this apply to all candles, e.g., non scented ones and t-lights? Tracey :( |

yes i believe from what i have read on different forums and in books is that they have the potential to kill any type of bird
:( as for if other candles are safe iam not sure, maybe buuz can answer that when she next comes on line. myself i dont burn candles, spray airfreshner , carpet cleaner, spray polish or anything of that type or use Teflon products. |

Wow..I have scented candles in my house. I have two Parrots right now and have burned candles for years now. It has never affected them. But they are also larger birds so maybe that makes a difference? I'm glad I read this...I am soon to bring Crickett, my new Parrotlet into my home and I certainly don't want to do anything to harm him! |

Hi Tracey, yes, candels can be toxic to birds. They have such sensitive respritory systems, that the fumes can & will kill them. Gail, you probably got lucky with your bigger birds, and the distance away the candels were. You can use beeswax candles, but unscented. If you want to freshen up the house smells, use a simmering pot on the stove. i put: 1 small pot of water, added to it a handfull of cranberries, 1 orange peel, 1 cinnamon stick, and a dash on vanillla. I put this on low, and let it simmer away all day. The house smells great, and no toxic fumes. I also used to burn candles years ago, and then I only had my conure. I think I got lucky as he was a bit bigger, and the room was big. I think thats the only way I got lucky! Also, dont use spray airfreshners, or the powder for the carpets. Frebreeze is ok, just remove the birds and bring them back 10 minutes after you spray, it dries quickly! |
