Hi all. I just got my first parrotlet yesterday and love him. However the breeder has already clipped the wings and I think much too severe. He's a young bird--about three months. How long will it be before I notice some of the clipped feathers being replaced? Do these guys more or less moult all year like other birds or do they have specific seasons? His name is Bogie. Also, any advice for working with a young bird and creating a bond/trust? I take him out about three times a day for only 15 minutes---I dont' want to stress him but if he can handle more let me know. I just try to talk to him or let him ride around on my shoulder while I do chores and get used to my voice. Any advice is appreciated and I can be emailed directly. Thanks all. |

hi caambers and welcome, its going to be quite some time before his feathers grow back again, pip was clipped when i bought him in September and his still have not grown back yet
:( i think it will be about 4 months before he can fly properly again. sounds like bogie is quite tame already if he rides around on your shoulders, if he likes doing this and does not seem stressed keep on doing it. has he got somewhere to play? they are very playful little birds and are quite happy playing by themselves out of their cage ( just keep an eye on him though as they tend to get into trouble :) ) 15 mins is a good amount of time for training and i dont think that this is to much. here is a link by a very good parrotlet trainer and this is what i use when training.... http://lmkandtux.homestead.com/Rbook4Utraining.html have you any pictures it would be great to see him :) :) |

Thanks to all the replies!!! I was afraid it would be some months before a few feathers were replaced but as long as he'll be OK I won't stress. I think I misspelled his name earlier...I get Bogey confused with Bogie and which one is for golf....I will get some pictures and post them tomorrow. Have a wonderful weekend all. Cathy |
