hi just a question to see if anyone else has ever had the problem that im having with my parrotlet. he is my first bird that i have owned so i am very much a novice. he keeps spending a lot of time walking around on the cage floor and seems to be lacking in coordination and balance, which makes him fall off his perches and fly into the side of the cage, which is getting him more stressed. he often falls asleep on the cage floor. i do also think he has a problem with his right foot so whether this problem is causing all the rest i dont know. i wasnt to sure either if this is breeding behaviour. he doesnt look sick hes grooming himself well, doesnt have diahrroea or any eye or nasal discharge. he is also not tame yet as i didnt get him from a breeder, so it is stressful for him to be picked up. if anyone has any ideas at all please let me know, as i really dont know what to do, and i know he's not his usual self. many thanks natalie |

hi Natalie, first of all welcome, sorry i wish i had some better news for you but you really need to take your bird to the vet, for any bird to sleep on the floor some thing is very wrong with him. if you've not had him long take him back to where you bought him and ask them to have him vet checked the thing with parrotlets they are VERY good at hiding illness kevin ps please let me know how things are going, sorry i cant offer any advice on getting him better but the vet is the best thing for him |

Hmmm, ok, so you know he hasnnt hurt himself by flying into something outside of his cage. Can you see anything on his foot, any kind of sore or something? It does sound like a trip to the vet is in order. Keep us posted! |

no the only time he probably has hurt himself is falling from his perches. i found an avian vet today in my area so ill make an appointment. he does seem better today though hes more himself. my mum did say though that he looked like a female who was egg bound as he was crouching. i was told that it was a boy, the shop owner said that the males have a stripe by their eyes like a mask, which he has. is this true?? im so grateful for all your help, u ave all been great. |

another quick question sorry if im doin your heads in. how is the best way to get the bird used to you, i have picked him up before to check his claws but he wasnt to keen. he has landed on my hand before while ive been cleanin him out, but somethimes if i put my hand in the cage he proper freaks out. so i really dont know were to start, whether to just leave his cage door open and let him out then try and catch cos he wont come to me or to pick him up and bring him out. both of which stress him out, and i hate seeing him like that. thanks everyone. |

I take it his wings aren't clipped. You best bet will be to just sit next to the cage, and keep you hand in there. dont try to touch him, just touch things around the cage. do this for about 10 minutes or so a day, and slowly get closer to him. when he is comfortable with you getting closer, touch his feet. then try to get him to step up onto your finger when he allows you to touch his tummy. Some birds will take to this quickly, and others it can take months. I have a feeling since your bird has been "wild" in his cage for a year, it will take a little longer. Just be consistent, and use soft talk to him & he will gain your trust soon enough. |

Me personally, I clip any bird I am hand training. It makes the lessons a lot less stressfull for the bird. BUT watch out, those little guys still fly pretty good even if they are clipped!!! I take all my birds to an avian vet, but would think any vet can do it, have them show you how to, so you can do it in the future too. Once you feel his is tame enough, you can either keep clipping, or let them grow out after a moult :) |

i dont normally clip but as buuz said they can fly like little demons when there not clipped, so it might be a good idea for you to get this done. a vet will clip him so he glides to the floor and does not drop like a stone. what you can try when putting your hand in the cage is, slowly put your hand in only a small amount, just until he seems to get scared about it, but before me makes a move to fly away from it. at that point remove your hand slowly and lots of praise. then do it again, same method. do this several times a day every day make sure your hand is a little bit closer before taking it back out of the cage.(even if its only 1cm closer you are making progress) what you are trying to do is show him that your hand is not a danger to him, and that he has no reason to fly away from it. you must remember to be consistent, and remember lots of praise, finish on a high point and a small treat when the training session has finished kev |
