Found a breeder and need some advice

Hello, nice to meet you all :)
I've only ever had budgies and really want to have a new friend who I can spend my time with as I work from home.

I live in London and have been looking for a breeder but it's proving difficult.
My boyfriend was bored the other night so he looked to see if there were any preowned parrotlets but stumbled across a breeder(?) who is in London and selling Celestials and Spectacled babies.

Here are the links to their ads

Celestials

Spectacled

I was curious to know your thoughts? if these babies look healthy etc.
I gave them a call today and I I'm guessing he was busy so I left a message on his answer phone.

I mentioned that I would like to go and visit him if possible to have a look at them and to have a chat...would there be anything I should look out for in particular.

It's also important of course that they are properly weaned and that they are being handled often. Are there certain question I can ask to make sure this person knows what they are doing and are safe?

Thanks in advance :)

Hi and welcome wave

As far as i can see the babies do look healthy but always be a bit cautious with pre loved ads, make sure you visit, this way you can see the conditions the birds live in and how there are looked after.
I would ask if i could look at the babies and handle them to see how they react to you,and you should be able to see what the parents are like as well.
Make sure the babies are fully weaned before you buy one, this is usually about 8 weeks

Hi, welcome to the forum! :)

Jackie has given you good advice. I would make sure the birds are kept in a clean environment and that they're active and alert looking. The babies might be a little fearful of new people but they shouldn't panic either if they are handled often as the seller claims. Good luck and let us know if you have any other questions.

Welcome to the forum 2.gif

As stated, all good advice. Celestials & Speccies do have different temperaments I believe. Some members on the forum have both so they can advise you more nodding 0163951

Hi and welcome :)
you have been given great advice so far!! And make sure you get to handle them.... Although spectacled tame normally go for 70-80 quid! So that's a bargin there!!
Speccies are a lot more tempermental than celestials!! And my ones rule the roost!! Smithy my adult male is the boss!! Lol!!! But I had one brought tame and she isn't as tame as she used to be, But I would recomended if you were to buy the spectacled find a partner for it as there are very few of us speccie keepers left and we have a handful of us who catch up and are going to swap for new bloodline etc... Like a speccie society lol! Speccies can take up to 4 months to sex... I though Pancake was a girl until his blue started to come through after about 3 month. Sometimes you can see blue earlier but you can't really garentee a hen until slighty older.
But if you get the speccie and want to get involved let me know!!! ( specs take 2 years to mature I think celestials take 10 months)

That's interesting about the Speccies! I didn't know they were more temperamental than Celestials (Pacifics) eek

Do you ever get any Green Rumps over there? There aren't many here in the US.

I have a pair of green rumped, hen is just under 2 so hopefully will breed this spring! To he honest I only know of oneother breeder! Were trying to find more. They was an article in the PS mag to try and get a group of speccies, green rumpe, blue wing and yellow faced as not many people keep them.
I don't know about green rumped inpeticular but my green rumped are extreamly shy, and we keep them high up ( I read somewhere they like to be high and away from distractions)
they are beautiful birds! They are plain green with a bright emerald rump and blue throughout wings. I have some pics on digi cam when I can get by computer I'll post them!

Hi everyone! I thought I would give you all an update.

I went to visit Stefano and I recommend him for anyone in or around London. He is a very nice guy and he knows his stuff since he's kept birds from a young age I believe. He is very passionate about his birds. I held two of the baby speccies and they very calmly snuggled right into my hands, I didn't want to let them go!

This is his site

Due to a typo I didn't mention that I had tiels also in the past..I've only had male birds and was concerned about getting a female as I'm not familiar with their behaviours ;ie laying etc. I would hate for the poor thing to start laying constantly due to something I'm possibly doing wrong or having some horrible thing like egg binding happen.
He told me parrotlets don't attempt to lay like other birds if there is no male/nesting place, is this so? I've seen other things written but am not sure what is right or wrong.

I work from home so have a lot of time to spend with my new bird and really enjoy training so would like a bird that will respond well to training.

I chose a female spec (as there were no males left) and also he mentioned females were easier to tame/train but would that be due to the fact that he's a male? most people I've known with birds repond better to an owner of the opposite sex.

I also chose a spec because I had read they were slightly calmer than celestials. So that is not true then? I know celestials can be quite bullheaded so exactly how much more tempermental are specs from your experience? eek

Thanks for your information bakewell, I would love to get 2 but that would only be a future idea as I would like to get used to the species before having two.

He has some male celestials left so after mentioning my type of personality (laid back, likes lots of interaction and training) do you think I should stick with the female spec or call him up and ask for a male celestial instead? I have no problem with an outgoing personality but my boyfriend really doesn't like the idea of overly crazy nippy birds and I would like him and my new baby to get along.

Sorry for all the questions drats and thankyou so much everyone for your responses! It's really appreciated :)

Aww you chose the speccie!!!! Keep her! ( but promise me if you do breed her pair her up wiith another speccie!!!)
they can be like I said tempermental but as long as you give her plenty of attention she will be your best friend. You must post a piccie of her!! And what have you called her?? Parrotlets LOVE lots of toys to play with too.
But parrotlets can be very nippy. And can choose favorite! For example my lorikeet loves me but can give my husband a hard time!! Lol!

Thanks for the reply bakewell!
I've done a lot of thinking and I have decided to stick with my original choice :) I mean..having those 2 babies snuggle in to my hands was a special moment for me!

I would love to possibly breed (of course with another speccie) in future when I have the time and resources.
On that note you should really get in toch with Stefano as he is planning on breeding more speccies and I'm sure he would love to get involved with whoever else is breeding them in the UK.

I've already ordered a TON of toys for her arrival...definately the hardest part of all this is thinking of a name
I have a few in mind but shall wait till her arrival to see what suits her, I will be bringing her home on the 27th and needless to say I'm very very excited.

You can be sure I'll be posting some pictures up when I get her.
