I'm a new member with a male parrotlet aged about 2. Not having much luck trying to post...so keeping this short ( just lost a great long introduction ! )

Hello,

I have just joined - own a male parrotlet called Oscar. He was bought from a local pet shop chain ( we felt really sorry for him, he was being sold very cheaply along with his three brothers and he was in a tiny weeny cage right in the middle of the place...they must have been terrified and we just knew one of them was coming home with us ). We left him in the shop ( they put him in the back for us ) and we spent the next two days buying a big cage, toys and doing some reading up having never kept birds before. He was practically wild when we had him and flapped around the cage in a panic every time someone moved. We had to make a conscious effort to be calm and quiet. He is now about 2 years old. My daughter pretty much trained him herself with absolutely buckets of patience and the aid of a clicker ! He will now sit on fingers, shoulders, spin round your finger, come when he is called ( mostly ) - he is very affectionate and gives 'kisses'...he can also be VERY moody as per the parrotlet trait !...and he can bite hard when he wants to ! He will 'say'....Oscar, Oscar. Kiss. Give me a kiss. What y' doin'. and Good Boy. He likes listening to music, he likes one of the cats, LOVES the dogs, but of course he never mixes with them outside of his cage !! - ( I think he tries to bark like the dogs and he makes a fuss when someone comes to the door like the dogs ). He adores his toys ( and will share sometimes ) - he especially likes fluffy toys and he always really wants the dog's fluffy mouse toy ( which is multi-coloured ) - if he sees the dog with it, he goes balistic ( even though he's not allowed to have it - dog spit..yuk ).

He's an adorable bird and we absolutely love him to bits, but we would really like to get him a girlfriend now as I think he would appreciate some company of his own kind. But, it's a big step and tricky to introduce another bird....we know we'll need to have another separate cage and it will be a long process which might not even work at the end of the day. So we are still really toying with the idea...but want what's best for Oscar. We've had many pets over the years, mainly cats and dogs - but Oscar is by far the biggest character and we wouldn't ever want to be without him !

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I think a lot of people with single parrotlets, at one time or another, toy with the idea of getting a friend for their bird. I have a single male in a cage too. He's also 2 years old. While I'd love to have a friend for him I think he might be too bonded to me and might reject another parrotlet.

Oscar sounds like a cute little guy. I just love it when they imitate household noises. My little guy, Spike, imitates dog squeak toys and and water running! Do you have any videos of Oscar talking?

Welcome to the forum 2.gif 0163951 0163951

Weel done to your daughter for keeping going with the training, it can get depressing sometimes when you try so hard but still don't seem to be making any progress. drats

I agree with Laura, I'd only get another parrotlet if you want one. I'm sure Oscar will do fine on his own. You will lose a lot of your bond with Oscar if you get another bird &, as you said, he may not get along with the new guy.

I had my female Miss Boo Boo for a few months before I got her a boyfriend. It was quite a job to get them introduced to each other & now they have a weird love/hate relationship. They get on ok, but they aren't really bonded to each other. A few months ago they started fighting a lot (hormones I think), after they'd been fine together for a couple of years. They're now in separate cages but are ok when I get them out together to play.

Anyway, it's up to you, I'm sure you'll make the best decision for you & Oscar, whatever you decide nodding 2.gif
