Hi folks,

My name is Gary and I live on the South Coast with my partner, 50 rabbits, 2 dogs, 1 cat, 2 seahorses and a large empty Aviary! The house was an animal rescue centre before we bought it we've just recently renovated the Aviary.

We are planning on getting a few birds for the Aviary but during my bird research came across the Parrotlet which looks like a fantastic bird. I have kept budgies in the past but would really like my own bird as a pet.

Looking forward to getting involved and learning from the forum.

Gary wave

Hi Gary,

welcome to the forum 2.gif

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Parrotlets aren't really an aviary bird, unless there's just one pair in there. More than one pair will fight 37 :scared:

If you're interested in Parrotlets you should probably put some other birds in the aviary (we have budgies in ours) & have the p'lets inside in a cage. They will bond to you then, if they're in the aviary they'll bond with each other & have nothing to do with you drats :(

Anyway, ask any questions you want, we're here to help nodding

Hi and welcome wave
Andy has just answered what i was going to say, i am afraid parrotlets do not make good aviary birds as they are very territrial especially if they is more than one pair in there as they will fight. I have 3 different pairs and i have to keep them all seperate as they will kill each othe

How big is your aviray?
we have a 12ftx10ft and its a mixture of a pair of plumhead parakeets, a pair of cockatiels, pair of bourkes, 4 pairs of zebra finches and 2 pairs of bengelese. Mixed avirys are so beautiful and all my birds get along great.

Hi Folks,

Well the plan is that the outdoor aviary will be a mixed aviary. We've been along to a few bird shows (we show rabbits and often the fur and feather tents are next door at the big agricultural shows!) and been advised about what birds can mix and match well.

The plan is that we will either have one single hand tamed parrotlet or a pair of parrotlets in an indoor large cage in the house and they won't be mixing with any other birds.

The Aviary is about 3 meters long with 2 meter flight area and meter enclosed area. The plan is to have a few budgies, a pair of Kakarakis, a few cockatiels and a few quails down the bottom to keep the place in order! The aviary didn't have a safety door so my partner is out in the rain with the saw and hammer building a new enclosed safety room (whilst I sit indoors and type!!)

The plan is to start populating the aviary in a month or so!!

Gary :)
