I am thinking of buying a bird for my family. i had a parakeet as a child but haven't had a bird since. I am trying to decide between a hand raised parakeet and a hand raised female parrotlet (they are all babies, ready to come home in a few weeks). we have 5 kids, three teenagers and two others age five and seven. i love the personality of the parrotlet, but i am concerned that she will attach to me and not let the kids handle her (with supervision, of course). any advice you could give would be helpful. I don't want to regret my decision--and although my heart wants the parrotlet, i am thinking that the parakeet is the more responsible choice for the kids. thank you. |

Welcome to the group blue2 Parrotlets can be very nasty.. i have 3... from babies My 2 girls I handle with a cloth as they bite me hard The Little boy is lovely totally different has never bitten me Id say think hard... I also have 2 cockatiels and I couldnt want a more gentle bird than them... Maybe other members here have young children with parrotlets and can advise you well Good luck Im sure you'll make the right decision.. nod2 |

I agree with Jan they can be very nice little birds but no guarantees they won't be nippy. |

I agree with Jan parrotlets can be very nippy little birds at times, i have had some nasty bites of mine but as Jan said it seems to be the girls that bite more than boys in my experience. :) |

Cockatiels are also a good bird for older kids. |
