Just got back from the other vet. Boo is 26.5gms, so more weight gain! The vet said there's just a very slight click to her breathing but she's 100% better than even yesterday. The vet also said not to worry about the "enlarged heart" that the first vet diagnosed, she was on a diuretic & they were giving her fluids, which is more likely to enlarge her heart a little than the actual infection.

So anyway, she gave me an anti-biotic just to cover all bases & said to keep her on all the meds for another 2 weeks. She's also going to stay in the brooder for a while, for health reasons & because I don't know how her & Pesto will get along now they've been separated for a week or so. They may never be able to go back in the same cage as each other, we'll just have to see what happens.

She's a real fighter and she is showing everyone she wants to live. I'm disappointed in your first vet for wanting to put her down. Seems as though he gave up when she still had a fight in her.

I gave her her medications this morning, boy, these guys can bite eek    I forgot how feisty they can be   She doesn't draw blood, so she's not biting me really visciously, but she makes me aware that she's not happy.

I was a little worried this am as she wasn't as feisty as she has been in the last couple of days, but then I figured she's not on the oxygen anymore (that would have given her more energy), plus she may have been overactive for a while just because she felt better

Anyway, she's not acting ill, it's more like she's her old, normal self. She's still eating like a pig & not fluffed so I'm thinking she's a LOT better than she was nodding

I'll weigh her tonight, as long as she keeps gaining & gets back to about 30-32gms She'll be fine. She may be a bit more susceptible to the fungus in the future, so I'm scrubbing & disinfecting every few days. I also put less food in for them & throw whats left every other day.

So, she's recovering nicely from all the signs 0163951 2.gif

I keep telling her, she's the most expensive parrotlet history & that people around the WORLD were thinking of her & rooting for her, so she'd better not worry us all again!!!! tuttut

She's a real fighter and she is showing everyone she wants to live. I'm disappointed in your first vet for wanting to put her down. Seems as though he gave up when she still had a fight in her.
Another thing that bugged me about the first vet (apart from giving up so easy), was that when I told them (at about 10am) that I wanted to bring her home they asked what time I could pick her up. I said about 2-3pm as I had to get everything ready for her. They said "can't you get her any earlier", so I said I could get her maybe around 11am, then they said "well, I guess that's ok". I thought, you shit heads, I've put a lot of coin over your counter in the last 4 days & you can't even look after her for another few hours!!! Angry Sile Angry Sile Angry Sile Angry Sile Angry Sile Angry Sile

I'm NEVER using them again, the second vet thought the prices they charged were outrageous!

I going to write them a letter about their prices, the fact that they were just giving up on her & the fact that they wanted me to rush her home. Angry Sile Angry Sile Angry Sile

Sure they gave her good treatment, but it seems like they just gave up & wanted her out of there.

Another thing was, the incubator thing they had here in had the heat turned off because, listen to this, they thought the oxygen would explode!!!! Oxygen isn't flammable in itself, it just feeds a fire!! Any high school kid knows that! Fire has to have a combustible material, not just oxygen Angry Sile Angry Sile Angry Sile Angry Sile So, at night they would just put one of those heat pads that you heat up in a microwave in there. Well those things only hold heat for 1/2 hour or so. That means that she for most of the time the temp was fluctuating eek

The Brinsea TLC4 has a constant temperature through the walls, so it's an even heat not concentrated in one spot. It also has a constant, filtered, air flow with a moisture system for humidity. I know the TLC4 was expensive & not everyone can get one, but you would think if a vet charges those extortionate prices they'd at least have something as good, if not better than what people can get for home use!!

'Nuff said.

That is unacceptable Angry Sile Angry Sile

Well you and Boo did ok by yourself and your home incubator. I would most definately write a letter to them stating what you have said here. Most vets can be given a review on line and if you can I would do it.

Wow I hadn't see this story til today and it's really great news that Boo has been improving, she's a fighter! It really made me happy to hear this and I'm so glad that this story doesn't have a sad ending!

About your vet, eep! How could they do that?! Poor baby! Abby has never had a medical emergency so now I'm worried about if a vet near me will be good enough for her crying

Anyway, I'm glad the new vet has been good! I hope Boo keeps on holding on strong!

Thanks all, the new vet is actually one that we took Boo to a long time ago for a wellness check, so she has been there before.

Here's a blurry pic of the little girl today at about 5pm..............

Thanks Kev, I'm the same as you, it's like all these little guys our "family members".

She's still going through the last stages of her molt, so she looks a tad "ratty"! drats

She's holding steady at about 27gms, which isn't great but it's not bad either. I'd like to get her back to around 30gms, that may take a little while though. nod2
