As long as you follow the diagram and are careful there are no problems with clipping, here is the thread on it http://s10.zetaboards.com/Parrotlets/topic/76525/1/#new. Remember that both wings MUST be clipped the same, start off with sat 10mm each side put him down and see how he goes, if hes off and about like there is no difference take another 5mm off each wing feather, he should be able to fly and land without flopping down on the ground. I will again say BOTH WINGS NEED TO BE DONE !!

Once you have done it once its so easy you will wonder what the fuss was about :)

What I really hate is when the people who are against clipping say " you wouldn't cut off a dogs legs to stop him running away would you" well its not quite the same as feathers grow back so take no notice about these type of comments.

Thanks for the link, Kevin - I'm wondering now whether I'm going have to do it myself.
I spoke to the bloke that Jackie (very kindly :) ) recommended, and he was very nice but said that he doesn't do wing-clipping, would only recommend it as a last resort, and also said that it should never be done on a bird younger than a year old because they haven't had time to develop their flying muscles properly. Has anyone ever heard this? Is Oscar going to have to sit in a cage for a year?? Wah! :(

The thing to remember that when you clip their wings you are not stopping them from flying especially Parrotlets, this may be different with big Parrots but with these little birds it only really slows them down.

Heres a video that may help you , if it worries s you one of you hold the bird and spread his wings and the other one does the cutting you will not hurt him if you follow the instructions its like cutting hair :) like I said before cut a little at a time

Wow...it really is a different attitude about clipping wings in the UK. Here in the US it is almost a given that your birds wings will be clipped. As for not clipping them for one year...I've really never heard of that before. I have been told that you should not clip them until they know how to fly...

Clipping wings is not a death sentence and as Kev said they are not like taking their legs off...they will and do grow back and rather quickly too I might add :) We do not clip them so that they plummet to the ground uncontrollably..we clip them so that they glide to the floor. They can still get off the ground they just can't stay that way for very long.

Thank you Kevin and Gail for your reassurance - the video's really useful, too.
I've finally managed to get hold of an avian vet that doesn't think I'm an evil bird-abuser and is, all being well, going to clip Oscar on Monday, yay!
I hope you find someone who'll clip your lovebirds Schmatalie - good luck, and don't give up with trying to find someone if you want it done. I think people should realise that wing clipping is so often for the safety and well-being of the bird, and as Gail says, not tantamount to murder!
Thank you again to everyone whose responded to me and has been so supportive - I'll keep you posted on how it goes! :) :) :)

Helen if you know someone local
to you who has birds they may know
how to do it also; and be only too glad to show you.
Thats how I learnt...
Clip both wings not just one! Ive a parrotlet who
has suffered from one wing clipping!
She ended up with a broken leg in 2 places and is now
disabled...
Long story its on the site somewhere with pics..
SO just make sure both wings are clipped...

Your bird will be ok just go to the floor when out...instead
of going round the room like a bat out of hell..
You just have to have eyes every where and be careful where u
walk All will be ok dont worry..

Thanks for the good advice, Jan - I'll definitely be watching where I'm walking! I'm so sorry to hear about your bird and her clip :( I hope she's getting on okay. I'll make sure both sides are done.
Don't worry, Jackie, Ron was actually the nicest 'no clipping!' person I spoke to - he was really friendly and tried to help, so it was still good to have a chat with him :)

YAY!!! Helen I'm glad you found someone to help you! You will see a major attitude adjustment with your little one and it will make it so much easier for you to work with him!

And Jan...you are so right in your description "bat out of hell" giggle
