So I know Kevin isn't strictly a parrotlet, but I'm hoping since this is a general question about egg-laying it would be ok to post it here. (I asked about this in a kakariki forum and my only response was read other posts, which I had done prior to posting and to take her to a vet IF she becomes egg-bound- which I promise you all I will do!) So here's the story, the other day I noticed Kevin had a bump near her belly-anus area. So she has eggs, which I kinda suspected would happen when I realised the "game" she was playing in my closet is best titled ' tear up traci's boots and make a nest' and then when I made my closet off limits it became 'tear up traci's notebooks in her drawer and make another nest'. In any case if you don't know the story behind Kevin I got her second hand and she had been malnutritioned (she laid eggs at her old home all right, and I kept decoys in her cage). She has 2 cuttlebones in her cage (Mochi came with two and he doesn't like them) and a mineral block (Mochi is very picky and I thought Kevin should be surrounded by nutrition) and I got liquid calcium with magnesium and phosphorus to put in her water and she's licked a couple drops off my fingers a day too (I tried force feeding it to her but I'm afraid to hold onto her too tightly) Basically my questions are: Should I let her continue to make nests until she's laid her eggs or will she just lay eggs in her cage? (She had had a cozy-shack that I threw out- it was is in a deplorable condition) Are there any early symptoms I should loo out for egg-binding? (She is pooing normal and eating a bit more and is still active) I eventually want to get a budgie to be her friend (she is so lonely and it is difficult to balance spending time with both birds! And if I do I would get the budgie from a breeder, quarantine it at a friends and keep it in a separate cage near her, at least for the first while- Kaki's get along with other birds for the most part) but I'm worried again if having a mate would cause more egg problems in the future? Also are there special egg decoys or is it ok that I have round eggs approximately the size a kaki would lay? Thank-you again for your consideration. jumping for joy jumping for joy jumping for joy jumping for joy jumping for joy |

Hi Traci, I know the article I'm posting a link to doesn't answer all of your questions, but it's a good general article on egg laying and becoming egg bound. You really want to discourage anything that leads to egg laying, which would mean removing anything in the cage that resembles a nest, and taking away things that can be shred up. Here's the article: http://www.tailfeathersnetwork.com/birdinformation/egglaying.php |

She might not be board of he egg birdgirl, most birds will lay an egg then leave it in the nest they do not start incubating until the second egg is laid, so she is probably waiting for the second one. If you have fake eggs in the cage I would remove these they might well encourage her to lay, the only time you have fake eggs is when you want to remove fertile ones for disposal if you had a male bird as well. I have to say that I know noting about these birds but in the uk I believe they are more of an avairy bird rather than a pet bird, but that doesn't matter really maybe she would be better with a partner if they get on with budgies get one but as I have said I dont know anything about these, I am sure Buuz has some but she doesn't come on much now. |

Oh all right, thanks. Like I said I don't really know much about nesting it was the next thing to make sure I learn to take care of her better.(right after sanitising her cage, getting her proper nutrition and exercise- which sounds so bizarre to say) Going from the Kakariki forum I've browsed it seems like they get along ok with other birds (so long as they can actually get along), one person keeps his with a cockatiel. Also kaki's don't seem like they are normally social towards humans (unless they accept you as their mate) and I think with me and Mochi being so close that it has just been a strain for both birds. :( Which I was afraid might happen. I think what I may do is research budgies some more- kaki's too, and if I think it could possibly work out, Mochi's breeder knows a budgie breeder and apparently all my friends have budgie cages in their basement/garage from when they had budgies when they were younger, and I know somewhere the budgie could be quarantined/live if it doesn't work out. But I will also try PM'ing Buuz to ask- might get their attention more. |
