I was reading the "is my bird sick" topic and it said if the parrotlet is hanging at the side of his cage its a cause for concern. Well chibi normally sits on his perch but sometimes when I or someone else goes in the room he goes a bit hyper and starts jumping around and climbs the sides of the cages with his beak and stuff. Is this normal?
Oh and im thinking of changing his diet cause the food we got from the breeder is a seed mix and i read somewhere that seeds are full of fat. So what kind of fruits and vegs shall i feed it and should i feed it hot food like rice?

It is quite normal for parrotlets to climb round their cages mine do it all the time. as long as he is not

hanging permanetely on the bars?

I feed my parrotlets a diet of cockateil/parakeet food, and i give them fresh fruit and veg everyday.

mine seem to like:
Apples
pears
kiwi fruit (favorite)
pomegranites
Chillies (fresh and dried)
all colour of peppers
sweetcorn
chick peas
broccoli
Beetroot(but not very often to messy)
white cooked rice ( cold)
brown toast

I feed them weetabix occassional mixed with a little skimmed milk ( but dairy products are not good for parrotlets)

do not feed them advocado's,chocolate, sugary or very salty foods and alchohol

Some people feed their parrotlets pulse and other grains but mine have never seem to have liked them much at all.

I think your Parrotlet is completely normal! nodding

Also some people don't know that cherry and apple seeds are deadly to birds.

Try raspberries too...(they look lovely on the wall!! LOL)

Oh thats good to hear :) Should I cook the vegetables for them?
Would a seed mix diet be good for them as long as I put vegetables and fruits in the cage as well?
or should i change to a pellet based diet? Oh and my parrotlet seems to love millet, always eating it. Should i only give this as a treat or isit fine to leave one in the cage and replace it once its finished? Cause like it seems to go through millet like mad. Ive only had it for like 4-5 days and its eaten like 4 Large millets.

The problem you would have with a pulse only diet is that you need to soak it,cook it, cool it and make sure its cooked properly which isn't bad to do if you have a few birds to feed but with only one bird who will only eat a couple of tablespoons of the mix when it is added to vegs and fruit its hardly worth the effort you less you really want to. I believe Jan does but she has 5 birds I used to when I had eight birds but now I have only Squeaker I don't bother. I feed him a cockatiel mix and also mix in a Parrot mix which has dried fruit in it, to this I also add some vegs broccoli sweet corn and apple.

I would go easy on the millet, it's ok while he's settling in but it's like candy to them, it tastes great but has very little nutritional value eek

Start weening him of the millet or he will never try other foods. I would only give him millet as a treat or when training. Ours only get a little once or twice a week.

Yes I cook things which need cooking.. but fresh
stuff no...

Mine also like cornflakes.. rice crispies.. ect...
Try something different.. time will tell if
they like it or not..

I feed mine a cockatiel mix, and normally pick out most of the sunflower seeds as they are really fattening and they won't eat anything else if they're in the bowl! I try to offer something fresh and interesting everyday... Even if it's not eaten the first ten times you offer it, it's something for them to think about!
I do give my birds the pulses about twice a week, they love them! The easiest way to do it is make a batch and freeze it in small portions. I bought a variety of beans and lentils from a health food shop, but I believe you can get a soup mix from any supermarket. Soak them overnight, rinse and then boil for approx 10 - 15 mins. I then divide it up into portions in clingfilm and freeze. Then get one out to defrost the night before you want to feed them. I also sprinkle vitamins or dried eggfood onto the beans and maybe some dried chilli flakes.
This does seem like a lot to do, but they do love it.
When I don't have time to sort out fresh stuff I might put in a dried mix I made up of diced dried fruit, nuts, chillies and a bag of dried grasses and herbs for guineapigs I found in a petshop (check ingredients to make sure it doesn't contain anything poisonous). I keep it all mixed up in a Tupperware box.
Naboo does tend to view anything fresh with suspicion... Raw brocolli goes down well, as does chickweed (after a good rinse, of course!)

Oh, and if I cook any pasta I keep a bit back for them, chop it up and sprinkle on the dried chillies and powdered vitamins, my cockatiels love this, naboo my parrotlet mainly likes to throw it around!

Great stuff guys, i'll try giving it some of this stuff later :)
Btw, When chibi steps up onto my finger he seems to be slouching down and not like standing up straight. is this how parrotlets stand on a finger? or does this mean he's getting too fat?

this is how Squeak sits but other Parrotlets I have had have stand different some lower some higher if they are very relaxed they might well sit right down and cover his feet with his feathers.

If hes sat down like this, its just him getting himself comfy to go to sleep, I have had one Parrotlet that would go to sleep on my finger.
