I cover all my birds at around 8 pm in the summer and then they are uncovered when I get up in the morning around 6.30 am although they are covered I don't try to be quiet or anything and they have got used to it. Squeak is probably asleep within five minutes of being covered, in fact I could cover him up at 6 pm - 6.30 pm and he would be quiet happy with that as he's normally sat waiting to go to bed around that time unless hes trying to get off with Babe the budgie eek

I have always covered mine up mainly because if I didn't the budgies would still be whittering away until I went to bed, now as soon as I say its bed time they get on their swings have a bit of a bicker then I don't here anything else until the morning.

congratulations on your new baby! You'll soon get to know what all the different chirps mean. Stepping up does take a little practice, but it's well worth the effort. I sat with mine in the loo for our lessons! (Toilet seat down of course!) Mine was a hand-reared one from wildheart which had been on his own for a little bit and not exactly cuddly and he learnt it really quickly.
I cover my birds at about 9.30ish. My male cockatiel starts doing alarm 'go to bed' calls if i don't! Also, the dawn chorus can trigger them off, so if you are a light sleeper a cover will keep them quiet!. Birds appreciate a routine, so covers help tell them it's bedtime too.
