Pairing a green and a blue?

Hi!

We have a green Lesson parrotlet (Forpus coelestis), they are called Pacific in English, I believe.

We plan to buy a "boyfriend" for her after summer break, not for breeding, just so she gets company during the day when we are at work and so on.

Some people here in Norway told me that if I buy a blue boy for her, it is less chance that they will like each other that much, an create a strong pair (love).

Can someone here tell me of your experience with this?

We would like to have 2 different colours, but if they don't bond, it is hopeless.

Please advise!

Thanks,
Toja

The color has no difference on them becoming friends, they cannot go right in with each other but better to put there cages side by side for awhile. Let them out after they get to know each other being sure your there to supervise if they don't get along. You don't have to get a male another female would work too.

Two diffferent coloured parrotlets should be ok
I have Sky and Scooby who have just produced 3 babies, and a bonded pair , Scooby is green and Sky is pastel blue.
I also have a couple of females who are together and their have bonded with each other, Smurf is dark blue and snoopy is green. so i see no problem with different coloured parrotlets been togehter.

If we get a male for our female, will they breed then if we don't put in a box for them? We would rather avoid that, but would like a boy and a girl.

They will probably mate a lot and she may well lay eggs as well even with out a box as some females do this. mine never but some do

Also I'm not sure how friendly your female is now. Once this pair do bond she may want little if anything to do with you anymore. Not always the case but very likely.

Yes, we have thougth about that. Our parrotlet is very friendly, so loves to be with us, so we are not sure if we want another bird. We give her a lot of love and get a lot back, and we don't want to loose that either.

We will wait and see. If she is happy with just us, we will probably not buy another bird.

Thanks for your help!

If your Parrotlet is very friendly with you and this is what you enjoy then I wouldn't get them a friend as they will become more friendly with the other bird rather than you.

All very good advice. As long as she has plenty of toys she should be fine on her own all day. Give her toys that she can shred & change them around often. As long as you give her an hour or two out of the cage with you each day, she'll do just fine nodding 2.gif
