I have a bonded pair of parrotlets that I "saved" from a pet store. They were marked at 50% off for the pair, and the female looked very ragged. When I asked about them, I was told that she was moulting, and that they were selling the pair off because they'd had them in the pet store for over a year. Nobody wanted a pair, and they tried to separate and sold the male to a family, but the female got very ill, and the family brought the male back as he appeared ill to them too. Once back together, they both were fine. They were in a small cage with very few toys, and I felt so bad for them, that I brought them home. Bought a large flight cage for them, and filled it with toys. Since coming home with me (Aug '07) they have slowly learned to eat pellets, eat fresh fruits and veggies, eggs... took a long time, but now they are great with a varied diet. :) The only problem (and it's really not that big of a problem I don't think) is that they are NOT tame. They have ZERO interest in me, or in any human. They won't come out of their cage. I have to literally traumatize them when I want them out... chase them around their cage till I catch them, one by one, and transfer them into a smaller cage. I do this so they can go outside on nice summer days - which they seem to really enjoy once they're out. But I don't do it often, because of the trauma involved. Once, I "forced" them out of their cage (caught them and let them go on top of their cage) - they flew around the house blindly it seemed, and kept crashing into walls/windows until I could finally catch them (my heart pounding like crazy!) and get them back "home". They seem very content to be in their cage together. I used to worry about the fact that they weren't getting "outside" time, but they seriously don't seem to want it. So why force something on them that they have no interest in? I hope I am doing the right thing by them. |

Welcome to the forum!!!! The only advice I can give you and it's controversial is to clip their wings..at least temporarily while you are trying to train them. You say they are flying haphazardly into walls and windows...that's not good.... :( |

I have a bonded pair and I also have them in a flight cage. My pair have there wings clipped though, I open the cage up and allow them to come out but the male seems not to be interested anymore in coming out. My female does occasionally come out but never leaves the top of the cage, I don't worry about them they have lots of room with lots of toys, most importantly they have each other and they seem quite happy I leave them alone now other than to keep the wings clipped. |

Hello Mary and welcome to the forum wave I can't really offer any advice as I'm pretty new to parrotlets myself. This is a good site though and I'm sure you'll get loads of good advice :) Well done on saving them from the shop too.... |
