Pesticide concerns

Hey all. So, apparently there's a bug issue in my apartment building and they'll be spraying next week. Aside from the huge inconvenience of moving food/dishes/etc. and having to wash everything a lot afterward, I'm obviously concerned about my birds. I'm planning on bringing them over to my parents' house for the day (the treatment is scheduled for the morning), and the instructions they left say that birds should be removed from the area for 2 hours, but I was wondering if anyone has experience with this and if two hours is really enough time. Obviously, this is a treatment intended for use in human living space, so I'm sure it's not THE MOST potent stuff out there, but I'd rather hear from someone that's had to deal with this before.

Thanks Kev and Laura. There's no rush, as the treatment isn't until Wednesday.

If you knew what they used on human food & around buildings etc, you'd move to Iceland!

It depends on what they're using & what they're treating for. Also, where are they treating? You have a right to know all the details & access to MSDS sheets, labels, etc. I would be very careful, if you can, leave them at your parents overnight. Birds are just soooooo sensitive :scared:

Angry Sile That stinks! I'd probably leave them overnight to be sure too. Best to be on the safe side. Can they stay here and play with Kairi?

Thanks for the input Andy. They'll be treating for insects, they aren't more specific than that. I'll stop by the front office on Monday to see if they have the data sheets on hand. The spraying will be around all of the walls, if I understand correctly. They instructed to leave foods and dishes, etc. covered in the middle of the room.... which seems really insufficient to me, so I'll have a LOT of washing to do on Thursday.

I'll be house-sitting for my folks this weekend, maybe the fids will just have an extended stay. Inconvenient, but it's best to be safe. :scared:

Dave, I'm not sure they play well with others! They're like miniature Godzillas when they get going, and sweet little Kairi might not be ready for their kind of "play"!! hide hide

It sounds like what they did when I was in my first apartment... they sprayed like this for roaches. We had to empty the cupboards, putting everything in the middle of the room & cover it. they told us the same thing, come back in a couple of hours... I took my cat (no birds at the time) and left overnight. then came the next day to scrub everything down... yuck!

I would be very careful here, these guys are obviously amateurs, the only reason to vacate the property is if they're "fogging" & if this is what they're doing then you don't need to put dishes, etc, under cover as they should be fogging with a non-residual drats :scared: :scared: If they're using a residual (which would be the only reason to cover everything) they shouldn't be "space treating" with it tuttut , it should be crack & crevice only  Of course, this is based on the California laws that my company has to follow, it's probably way different in Colorado.

They have to have a "target pest" & you have a legal right to know what chemicals they will be using. These guys are using very old fashioned methods that would never be allowed in California, & to be honest, with the modern materials, the old methods don't work.

I haven't had a chance to check in with the main office yet. Frankly, I have no idea what pest would be enough of a problem in January in Colorado to do a spraying. The notice didn't actually say that people had to vacate the place unless they have a breathing condition, otherwise they made note that pets (especially birds) should be removed for two hours. I'm going to go ahead and leave the fids (and all of their food/accessories) at my folks' place for the night, I'll head back to the apartment and do some serious cleaning while they're away. It's going to be a huge pain moving all of my food/dishes into the middle of the room though. Ugh.
