Just a quick warning about using fragrant candles in your home when you have Parrots, some can be very bad and may cause death for your bird. there is a topic on another bird board about Christmas fragrant candles where the person used them and both of the birds in her care died within hours of lighting the candles heres a link http://www.parrot-link.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=34612&highlight= |

Scented candles can be deadly to birds. I used to burn them in a room away from my birds, but I don't even do that any more. I don't want to take any chances. I have heard that Soy or Beeswax candles are safe. Anyone know for sure? |

I stopped burning candles too. Has anyone seen those LED flickering lights that look like a candle flame? Some are made of wax, some plastic or something, but they look great. These might be good to try if you really want the look of candles at Christmas. |

What about candle warmers? Those little hot plates that are designed to release a candle's scent without actually lighting a candle... anybody try those? |

Good to know this. I had a cockatiel and used to have the scented candles burning with him about without troubles. Does it affect some birds more than others? Also, would I be ok with a normal air freshener? Good job I haven't lit any of the scented candles whilst I've had Tino!!! eek Edited by neil29, Dec 5 2008, 08:58 PM.

It's generally the added scent that causes the problems. So unlit warmers, air fresheners, even those incense sticks or oil warmers that are popular at college, basically anything designed to smell nice can be a risk. Some birds don't seem to be bothered, others drop off the perch from just a little bit, so it's hard to predict. There's actually some evidence now that the stuff they put in many scented candles isn't very good for us humans either (the canary-in-the-coal-mine hypothesis applies -- we aren't fundamentally that different from birds, just bigger); we don't use them at all anywhere in the house. If it's just the look of candles you want, unscented (and beeswax if you want to be really careful) are usually considered fine -- just standard warnings about being careful with feathers and open flames! |

That's good advice Laura, if it's bad for animals (& birds) it's probably not good for us either tuttut |

I've also heard that when you light the wick of a candle, it can omit lead into the air as well... |

Me too Bonnie! Who knew! In our defense though...Bonnie and I have had parrots almost 20 years and back then there were very little warnings about what was good or bad for them. :scared:
