Hey all, so I've noticed over the last couple of days that both Bellinda's and Custard's beaks look a little different. They almost look flaky or too dry or something. I was wondering if it's normal for their beaks to do that every once in a while. Otherwise, I guess my question would be what could be causing it (calcium deficiency, bacterial infection??). Anybody know? P.S. They seem healthy otherwise, still eating lots and drinking and playing and preening and rubbing their beaks on their perches, and all those other shenanigans. |

flaky beaks are quite normal, as a beak is constantly growing and the parrot wears it down sometimes it can look very flaky. |

I agree with Kev. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about. Here's a short article I found about it... http://birds.about.com/od/birdhealth/f/flakybeak.htm |

Yes it is a normal even with birds. You may notice them rubbing there beaks more often during this time. |

I think the flakiness shows up more on light beaks that parrotlets have. It's harder to see on dark beaks nodding |

That makes sense. Dark beaked bird owners might just not realize that their bird's beaks are flaky. Can you tell on your conures, Laura? |

You can always rub a little olive oil on their beaks if you want. |

There's no way in the world they would let me do that. Aside from stepping up, they don't let me touch them. They aren't hand tame yet and one or the other of them breaks the skin on my finger about once a week. hide Thanks though, for the suggestion. drats |

You have to look a lot more closely on the conures. I really notice it a lot on the parrotlets. Don't feel bad about getting bitten. Our little celebrity 'Pesto' has hooked on to me a few times lately. Andy had to pry him off both times! (he's a tad cage territorial) eek |

The last time Pesto got Laura, he was hanging by his beak from her finger, the little sod wouldn't let go eek I had to actually pry his beak off her, I think he's part ferret drats |
