Hey guys, as you know i got my baby two on Saturday 17th November!! I totally adore them! Basically i think the mirrr was gettin on their nerves since it was in the middle, as soon i took them out they flew to my side of the cage and stared at me for a good 5 secs, they kept comin back n forth! i think thats a good sign, since wen the mirror was ther they never came much to me, but now they are here same end im at and seem pretty happy :D. I stroked them on the head the female was openin her mouth but gradually got used to me strokin her, thru the cage ofcourse and then i stroked the male and maaan he loved it he was sitting there letting me stroke for a good 1 or 2 mins! The girl was a lil scared but i still stroked her for a min, not to annoy her but for her to get used to me..i been sitting with them since 1 with the laptop! Just a few questions, do they show signs if they want something back in their cage? and what vegetables do you feed yourr 'lets? lastlyyy how do u know they are lovin the stroking? oh and when do u think its right time to open the cage and let them come out? And how often do u bath themmm? p.s their only 11 weeks :) Some are obvious but i just wanna make sue that im not like pestering them Many thanks in advance Rhea:) blue1 Edited by Rhea, Nov 17 2008, 04:34 PM.

Hi Rhea! I'm so glad you are enjoying your new babies! I'm not sure about them showing signs of wanting something back in their cage or not. May be someone else here has had that experience. I feed Cricket ...green beans, lima beans, carrots, peas, corn, sweet and white potatoes and basically any veges we have for dinner. And you can tell if they like the stroking...trust me you can tell!! lol! They pretty much melt! :) And if they don't like it...they sure will in no uncertain terms let you know it! nodding Edited by Gardengail, Nov 17 2008, 05:35 PM.

Hi Rhea, if you want them tame, having a mirror in the cage is not a good idea as they will be more interested in the "other" bird in the mirror than you. Being as you have two they will probably never be as bonded with you as just a single bird would be, but they can still be made to enjoy time with you & should step up, etc. First, birds should never be let out of their cage unsupervised. there are too many things in a human environment that can cause them harm. Just like children, you need to watch them at all times. I would take one bird at a time into a different, small room (preferably a bathroom with the toilet seat closed & the mirror covered) & work with each bird one-on-one. Don't worry if they chirp for each other, this is natural. Try making a "ladder" out of your fingers & making them climb up your fingers repeatedly (stepping up), take some treats with you (millet, Avi-cakes, etc) & reward them for good behavior. Always be positive (birds pick up our emotions very well!!) unless the bird is biting. Let's deal with your questions........ "do they show signs if they want something back in their cage?" - Well, they might chirp or show signs of agitation if you remove something they like, but toys should be changed about once a week or so in order to keep them interested & stimulated. they get bored with things the same as we do. If you're asking about the mirro, see above. "what vegetables do you feed your p'lets?" - Some things are toxic to birds (avocados, etc) & there is a list here somewhere that lists things not to feed birds. You'll have to do search for it. Basically, most beans are fine, lentils, broccoli, carrots, sweet potato, pasta, bread, corn, etc, etc. "lastly how do u know they are loving the stroking?" - If they're not, believe me their sharp beak will let you know rofl rofl rofl rofl "oh and when do u think its right time to open the cage and let them come out?" - Anytime you can spend time with them is fine for the birds. They do need to eat & drink regularly, so if you have them out of the cage for extended periods, you need a play gym or somewhere that they can get food & water if they want it. I wouldn't let them out just before bedtime as they might take longer to settle in for the night when you put them back. But as I said, anytime is a good time really. "And how often do u bath them?" - P'lets are known for not being great bathers, but some like to be misted, others like to bath themselves(usually in the smallest water source they can find  ). Boo Boo likes me to cup my hands under a running tap & make a small "pond" for her to splash around in (I think there's a video on the forum somewhere), whereas Pesto won't go anywhere near water (stinky little swine  ). Just experiment & see what they prefer. P'lets have oil preen glands so they don't get "dusty" like some other parrots (good for allergy's). Hope this helps. Andy. |

Hi Rhea, they sound ready to come out of their cage any time now, I wouldn't wait much longer, you want to get them used to you right away. You can start by leaving the cage door open and see if they come out by themselves. Have some sort of treat ready, like millet, or anything they really love to use as a lure. You can tell if they like the head scratches because they will puff up their feathers and sometimes turn their heads so you can reach other spots. If they are really loving it, they close their eyes with their little heads fluffed up, it's really cute! I don't know of a way to tell if they want to go back in their cage. They would probably just fly back to it. :) Our guys love broccoli, corn, peas and carrots. |

You have gotten excelent advice, with only having them a day or two it will take time for them to adjust. You will soon be able to tell if they enjoy your company. They may be little but they act like a big bird

I forgot to add, you can try leaving the cage door open & just sit with your hand in the cage (maybe hold a little piece of millet). Let them get used to your hand being there & eventually they will start climbing around on your hand. Let them do this a few times before you take them out of the cage. |

They sound great - do you have pics of them? I'd love to see them. I just got my first parrotlet 2 weeks ago and didn't even know you could have more than 1 in a cage. drats |
