Okay, so I don't have the birds yet, but I'm very optimistic that I'll be bringing two home tomorrow, rehoming them for someone in my area. They have one male and one female, not related, about 1 1/2 years old. Apparently they haven't shown any interest in breeding yet, which is okay by me. As much as I'd adore having parrotlets and I think I will make a good caregiver/friend for one or two, I really don't have the time or resources to start breeding. SO. My first question is, is there a way I can discourage the little guys from breeding? I fell upon birdboard.comthis page the other day, but the more opinions/points-of-view, the better, so let me know if you have any thoughts. Obviously, putting them in separate cages would alleviate my concern, but I'd rather use that as a last resort. I guess that's my only pressing question for now, but I'm sure I'll remember something else I wanted to ask as soon as I log off. :P Thanks! |

I think the best thing is not to put a nest box in the cage, or anything that they could use as a nest, remember you may well see them mating but this doesn't mean that they will produce eggs they have sex for fun. |

lol, okay. Thanks a bundle! Any tips on what I should do if I do eventually find eggs (fertilized or not)? |

as you will not know if they are fertilized you could throw them away or give them a nest box, breeding is not for everyone there is a lot of worry involved. |

What Kev said. Don't put anything in their cage that could encourage them to breed. :) Even if she does lay an egg, chances are it will fall and hit the bottom of the cage and crack anyway. :) |

Yes as Kev said breeding is not for everyone, Kev went through an awful lot with his pair but he did get a beautiful baby finally. If you do breed there is the chance you may not find homes for them right away so that would mean extra cages needed. |

Thanks again for all the input, everyone! That's a lot of good advice to keep in mind. I've brought the pair home today! I can't wait to get to know them. :D nod2 |

Thanks, theexbrit! I'm pretty excited. They were handfed/handraised, but haven't had a lot of attention recently so they're a bit skittish of me right now. They've settled in pretty comfortably though and did a lot of chirping, eating, and moving about this afternoon (provided I wasn't too close to the cage...). They even did some beak grinding before settling down for the night. <3 I don't have names picked out yet, any suggestions? I'll get some pictures up tomorrow if I'm not scaring them too much. Yay! |

That's great 2.gif Be patient, they will get more used to you every day. Just remember though, with 2 birds they won't be quite as tame/bonded with you as just 1 bird would be   |

I'm not in any rush for them to get friendly with me (I can't wait, of course, but I can be patient. :D ). They're comfortable in their new home, and that's pretty good progress already. I know they won't be as bonded to me as to one another, but as long as we can all get along, I'll be satisfied. |

Thanks Neil! I posted a pic under a different topic earlier today. Once they're a little less shy I'm sure I'll be taking pictures like crazy and you'll have to ask me to stop. :P Posted Image The one in the back is the male, he's a little more skittish than the female. |

Hey, congrats on your new pair! I just got a 6-mo old male 2 weeks ago. If you happen to be in Denver and know of any good places to pick up things for parrotlets, we'd love to know about them. How is your pair doing? |
