I am new to parrotlets and I am looking for as much advice as possible. I have visited a breeder of parrolets this afternoon and he has told me breeds his birds in cages then seperates the males from the hens for two/three weeks after breeding as finished. He then puts them together into an avairy. He informed me that you may get the odd bird that causes trouble which he then removes. He said you will only have problems when you have nest boxes present.
Does anyboby else adopt this practise?

When your birds have finished breeding for the year, do you remove the nest boxes and leave the birds in the breeding cages or do you move them to bigger accomodation, to build up their strength for next year.

After reading all the articles on the internet this is the only area I am still confused with.

Advice greatfully appreciated

I've never heard of a breeder doing it that way, I would be afraid of fighting.

I've heard of that being done. The normal way (& the what we did) is just to remove the nest box & leave them in the cage. They shouldn't breed again if there's no box. Our breeder cage is a regular size cage anyway (30" wide x 17" deep x 18" high or thereabouts), so there's no change of habitat for them. I don't believe in changing things around too much. Why put them in a different cage for breeding  Unless their regular cage is very tall & you're going to let the parents raise them, then the babies could fall from the box. Otherwise, just put the box on the regular cage. I believe that's the way all the breeders here have done it..

I wouldn't recommend putting more than one pair together and dont know any breeders that would as they will fight at some point, as thats what Parrotlets are like, its also not unusual for males or female to have toes missing when they are just kept in pairs. In the wild they do live in small family groups but they can also fly away when they need to they can not get away in a cage, unless it occupied hundreds of square feet.

Thankyou both for taking the time to reply, it is appreciated. I think I will leave them in their cage. Once again thankyou.
