I've just clipped charlie and lolas wings but i don't think i clipped enough. I studied the diagram you provided a few weeks ago Kevin but when it came to it i only clipped 6 feathers, was that a waste of time do you think? They haven't been out since we moved 3 weeks ago as it's been so hectic. The new house is quite open plan, and i had to put their cage is the extension cos it's too big for the front room. Their room opens into the dining room and there's a little hatch through to the kitchen. When i was transfering them back into their big cage charlie escaped and i had a hell of a job catching him, he went through to the kitchen and was flying onto the tops of the kitchen cupboards, nightmare! Since then Charlie has been really noisy, doing his 'alarm chirp' nearly all the time driving us all nuts! I got them out in a t- towel to trim their nails as they were looking long, i though maybe they were troubling him, and i though while they were in hand i'd do the clip. Trouble is when it came to it i didn't want to overdo it, and the lower primarys looked so small so i just clipped the first 6, and i only took about 1 cm off. They seem able to fly as before in their cage, it doesn't seem to have had any effect at all. Edited by abby, Aug 23 2008, 01:06 PM.

6 feathers will have an effect (if they are primary feathers). They will probably be able to fly for a ways in level flight, but they won't get any altitude wave You can always take a little more off or another feather or 2 nodding |

It sounds like you've got further than me with the training Jan! Lola is good as gold in the cage IF i have food, but outside, forget it! Charlie just plain hates me, don't think I'll ever get there with him, but hopefully he'll stay off the kitchen cupboards now! Trimming was actually easy though,if a bit nerve wracking. I did it alone, if you're getting them in and out in a t-towel you should be able to do it no problem. I'll get them out tommorrow and see if it has any effect, fingers crossed for me! :) |

I have to give you credit on the wing clip! I still haven't mustered up the nerve with Cricket, but soon I will. I hate taking him way to the other side of the City for something like that with the cost of gasoline when I could very easily do it myself. They should be clipped in a way that they can still "fly" but they can't gain any altitude. They kind of float to the ground. I think you will be fine with the clip you did Abby! |

Waiting to hear how the fly time went today? Did it stop them going to the tops of the cupboards? I still haven't the nerve to trim mine! Jan |

What a disaster!! Basically they wouldn't come out, and i didn't want to force them. Charlie was terrified as usual and was flying round his cage to get away from me, the cage is quite tall and he has no problems flying up it worryingly! Lola was a good girl, sat on my hand so sweetly listening to me talk, but every time my hand got to the door she flew back in! I'll try again tommorrow, just really nervous that the clip hasn't worked. |

Abby, are you afraid that Charlie and Lola are still able to fly too much? If you are, you can just clip a few more feathers. But first maybe you can let them come out of the cage on their own by leaving the door open and see how they do once they're out. I'm sure we have a photo somewhere on the forum of someone's bird who has just been clipped. I think that might be more helpful than a drawing. I'll go look for it. :) |

And sitting quietly and just cuddling and chatting to the birds in turn? Sky luvs this.. but doesnt like being touched... Mint luvs her head rubbed... We sit like this for ages sometimes... Heyyyyyyyyyyy Abby we will both get there.. One day the forum will see pics of our birds.. sitting on our hands!!! 2.gif Keep smiling ...Jan giggle Edited by Jan, Aug 25 2008, 04:43 AM.

Jan, I can catch them in my hand in the cage then wrap them up and they both enjoy a head rub then, but it's so stressful for them catching them that way, i hate chasing them round the cage. As for just leaving the cage open... they make a huge point of avoiding that open door at all costs  . I will get them out again later, i just really wanted them to do it on their own, but if i have to catch them then so be it. Those pics would be helpful Laura thanks, iam worried they can still fly too much but i'd rather that than go too far and them not be able to fly around their cage. |
