Just to let you know that i got a baby parrotlet from Tracey and Sue a few weeks ago and i couldn't recommend them enough! i Will warn you though, be firm in your decision before you go- you're going to fall in love with every bird in the shop and have to be very strong to only come away with one! giggle

I also firmly believe that wing clipping is the way to go, especially during training. If they can fly away from you it's 10 times harder to train them. Also from a safety point of view we've clipped Boo's wings again. I see all these missing birds & think "if only they'd had their wings clipped, they wouldn't be missing". It is cute when they can fly, but to me, the risks are not worth taking: ceiling fans, open windows/doors, boiling water in the kitchen, windows they can fly into, etc, etc. All these hazards are in a house but not in the wild :scared:

It really doesn't seem to bother them that they can't fly & they really enjoy being with you more when they're clipped (they probably feel safer & they enjoy riding around on your shoulder or finger).

The only thing with clipping their wings is that you have to watch them every minute when they're out of the cage as they can't fly away from any danger. But as I said, I think the risks for a flighted bird are way higher than for clipped bird. But that's just my opinion, it's purely up to you as an owner.

I really dont want to get into the arguement for and against wing clipping. But as a breeder I would not advise anyone to have a baby bird clipped. My reason for this is... A bird needs to be able to fly to build the chest muscles up and if they cant then you could have a weak chested bird.
There really does seem to be a misconseption that 'clipped birds' have less chance of getting lost, because they cant fly. This too I am afraid is not the fact. Wing clipping reduces the upward thrust, meaning the bird cant get the height, but they can still fly low. Also with a tiny bird like the p'let they only need a breeze to pick them up and they are gone.
Again this is the owners preference but that is my opinion :)

I have never had any of the wings of my birds clipped ,as i believe a bird should have the freedom of full flight , but this is an on going argument. when training ollie i nearly had his wings clipped but i could not bring myself to do it .
This is just my opinion after all the feathures grow back when their moult ,so it is not a permanent thing, it is definetely up to the induvidual and if you find it easier to train the bird with it wings clips by all means try it.
:) :) :) :bana: :bana:

As we've all said, it's really up to you as nearly everyone disagrees about this subject

Just to confuse you even more, here's some very good articles articles about the subject, from "Birds n' Ways", "Birdmart Online Community" & "Exotic Pet Vet..........................................

As Andy said there will always be those for and against and if we do clip we all have our reasons for doing so. Mine is for the boys safety as its only Squeak I clip as I do feel that some of the males have a show off gene, I have lost one male because he got too fast for the room and ploughed head first into the wall and later died, and I didnt want to loose another.

What we should remember is our birds will never have real freedom of flight as they are pets and in all intents and purpose's are caged animals, so we all have to do what we feel best for them.

Yes I have been on too many bird forums that this turned into a bad situation. As Kev has said our birds have lost there freedom once we decide to own them. Unless you have One hell of a LARGE LARGE flight cage they will never get enough flight time in to be what they would be in the wild.
