I've noticed with Boo Boo that since she's been able to fly she's way more independent.

I would suggest to anyone that has a p'let they want to train, clip the wings until they're fully trained :)

If they have to rely on you to really get around they'll be much easier to train & will come to trust you a lot quicker. Also, they'll know that every time they step up............ it's play time!! :P :P :P

I keep my two clipped because Adam still won't do a step up when in the cage. I'm too afraid he may get frightened and fly into something and hurt himself or worse :(

That is a worry now that Boo can fly :o She got spooked by something once & banged into a window whereas Pesto just fluttered down to the ground nod nod2

Hi Jan, I think Max is a bit of a mummy's boy! When we went to the shop to collect him we had the choice between the spectacled and the celestial. The spectacled didnt want to sit on our hand at all, just kept flying off. Max, however, didnt fly away once! He loves just sitting on our hands and doesn't seem interested in flying! I was a bit worried at first as I was scared he wouldnt get enough exercise. He loves hopping and flying short distances between me and my friend. He seems to have mastered the stepup but we haven't tried step down yet!

Max sounds like a smart little guy

Don't worry about the step down, sometimes we have to "pour" our birds off our hands laughing Conures & p'lets!

the step down is the same as the step up Jess, if he's on your finger and you want him to step up onto a perch, just move him towards the perch so it is just above his feet and say step up, he will soon get the idea. they are not keen at all on stepping down, like when we go down a step they will prefer to always step up.

There was a person on another forum who had a parrotlet that was stepping up very well, until one day he thought it would be funny just as his parrotlet stepped up onto his finger, to quickly move his finger out of the way, that Parrotlet as far as I know never stepped up again. Stepping up is all based on trust, he has to trust you not to move your finger out of the way.

So glad to hear that everything is going so well with you and Max, he is a little darling  I did hold him in the shop and he's a lovely little chap. :)

Lol Jan - the thing with parrotlets is they're really energetic and I always find that the best way is to let them out the cage and fly for a bit - work off some of that energy - then go get them from wherever they're dangling from :) Then you can sit with them quietly on the sofa letting them walk over you and they especially love to preen your hair, eyebrowns/lashes etc. The trick is to let them fly, then take a hold of them and dont be over careful handling them, they're pretty hardy little birds and sometimes you have to be a bit firm with them. You build trust with them by kissing them on the beak when their on your finger. Good luck - you're doing a great job.
