If the forum seems huge on your monitor, it's more than likely that your monitor is not running at it's "native" resolution. The board (& other sites too) should appear the same on all monitors if they're set at their native resolution (or close to it). Some people crank their resolution down to 800x600 because it makes the text, etc, bigger & is easier for them to read. But this also makes everything look bigger hence the forum appears huge & you have to scroll every page to see it. All monitors have different native resolutions. I have a Samsung 22" widescreen running at 1680x1050 (pixels) & everything looks fine. If I were to take the resolution down to anything lower than 1280x1020 say, they pages would look huge because I'm cutting down on the number of available display pixels which means the remaining pixels have to "spread out" (for want of a better description) to fill in the gaps. Most times you won't notice the difference unless it's a page that you visit regularly (you get used to it one way) then something changes (format, java, etc). If the forum looks huge, right click on your desktop, click "properties", choose the "settings" tab & near the bottom you'll see what resolution you're running at. The slider will be all the way to the right if you're monitor is displaying at it's native resolution. Everything will look sharper & clearer at native res, same way as a 7 megapixel camera takes way sharper & clearer pictures than a 2 megapixel camera. If you have to lower your resolution to read everything clearly, the you need a bigger monitor I'm sad to say. Monitor prices have dropped dramatically in the last year or so, you can pick up a 22" widescreen for less than $300. So go on, treat yourself to shiny new 22" widescreen, you'll really be surprised at the difference :o Browsers usually have an option to increase the font size, this should help those who still have trouble with reading the text at a higher resolution. If you're using Windows XP you should also set your "effects" to use "clear type" as this will help the text become clearer. To set "clear type"...... from the "Display Properties" window (see above for getting to "Display Properties") select "appearance". (here you can increase your font size if you wish) Click "Effects" & in the pop up window make sure the box is checked next to "use the following method to smooth the edges of screen fonts:", then click the drop down menu underneath this text & select "clear type" instead of "standard". It make a nice difference to how text is displayed on your monitor. Like any change, it takes some getting used to the new font size & some people give up & go back to a lower resolution. But stick with it, you will get used to it ;) If you have any questions, post your monitor make & model # here & I'll try to help. nod nod2 |

If members are seeing the forum very large, do you mean that you have to scroll to read the whole page left to right, or do you mean because it goes all they way across your screen, unlike some forums that are in the middle of your screen. I am a bit confused as this forum is fluid, meaning that you can make your browser window wide or small and you will always be able to read the forum without scrolling until you get down to less than 800 pixels then it will be bigger than your screen. kev |
