Not knowing this birds history makes it hard to give advice. But to start with, I've found it's best to have the wings clipped (by a professional that knows what they're doing) during training. This means that the bird can't fly away & also has to rely on you to pick it up if it fly's down somewhere. This builds trust. Sometimes it needs a lot of patience to win over a bird. Birds are prey animals & have very strong survival instincts :scared: you have to convince the bird that you're not a predator. As Bonnie said, you need lots of one-on-one time in a small room with your bird. Never chase him around in the cage or out, that's a predator action. Continually talk to him in a calm, soothing tone, make little chirps & whistles, etc, to simulate another bird (you don't have to be a perfect bird mimic, just reassuring noises is fine). You may need to spend time (several days) just sitting by the cage talking to your bird, let him know that you're not a threat. Once he shows an interest in you, you can try leaving the door open & see if he will come out on his own. Again, never chase him around or try to grab him! tuttut If he comes out of the cage on his own just let him wander around, you must talk to him all the time as predators don't make noise & if you're talking he knows you're not trying to sneak up on him. Let him come to you (it may take quite a while, but you must stick with it), just sit with you hand resting near him & see if he will eventually climb on your hand. Try taking a treat with you & holding it in the hand you want him to climb on. Use something that he really likes such as millet or some other special treat. Just use your judgment & exercise a lot of patience. These animals are not truly domesticated like dogs, so you really have to take your time & win their trust. Patience, patience, patience!! nodding nodding nodding 2.gif |
