Paladin is shown standing outside of what looks like a hospital waiting room, his arm outstretched. There is a dazed and tired look in his eyes, as though he is still half asleep. He rubs the back of his head. It becomes apparent from the low quality of the footage that Rider was filming himself, most likely with his phone. He sighed, scratching his chin as he thought about how to begin.
“You know what the most terrible thing in the world is about growing up?” Rider said with a chuckle. “It’s that moment you realize that, sometimes, life just isn’t fair. Sometimes, no matter how hard you work, no matter how much you deserve something...it just doesn’t happen. And that is a hard pill to swallow for some of us.”
“So, here’s what’s happened. Last night...I tried to attack Mordrad. Take matters into my own hands because, no matter how much I beg and plead, no matter how hard I’ve worked all year...I’m just not the guy they want in the spotlight. Your main event for Summerfest will be Mordrad versus Crowe, the monster versus the brat.” Paladin sighed. “And I hope that they tear eachother apart.”
“But...as I’ve said before, it should have been me.” Paladin said, shaking his head. “It doesn’t make sense to me, and I don’t think it ever will, how a woman who hasn’t been here all year suddenly gets to take the spotlight for them-self at the biggest show of the year and be in the main event. But, I’m done whining about that. As we’ve established...life isn’t fair.”
“Life wasn’t fair when Wire turned her back on our team. Life wasn’t fair when Mordrad threw me out of the ring and nearly ended my career. Life wasn’t fair when his goons attacked one of the few men I consider to be a friend. And life wasn’t fair when I had to outlast nineteen other competitors only to get thrown out of the ring by a woman who only just entered the match. But, that’s the hand I’ve been dealt.”
Rider leaned his head back against the wall. He seemed exhausted. “During my most recent meeting with Mordrad, one of his new assistants assaulted me from behind. From there, Mordrad did everything in his power to crush my skull. I’m about to get more tests to see if I have a concussion...but I already know that I do. I’ve had them before, and this feels just as terrible. Honestly, I’m lucky that I’m even conscious right now.”
“Which brings me to my announcement and why I felt the need to hold this little broadcast…” Paladin leaned his head back, thinking long and hard about what he had to say. “I won’t be competing at Summerfest. And, I know that’s a hard thing for a lot of people to hear. PRW’s officials are probably delighted, but they can go fuck themselves for all I care. I know I won’t be cleared, and even if I was, I’m in no state to compete.”
“This is one of the few times in my career…” Rider said, gazing off in the distance. “Where I’ve had to ask myself if it’s all worth it. Is it worth working my ass off night after night, making the Internet Championship what it is today, only to be shafted at the biggest show of the year?”
“I’m not sure.” Rider said honestly. “But Father Carter always said that true change can’t come without sacrifice. So...I’m going to issue a warning…” The Brit turned to the camera. His eyes seemed to lock onto everyone watching. “When I return...I’m coming for you Mordrad. You can try and get rid of me all you like, but regardless of whether or not that title’s around your waist, I’m coming for you. My challenge still stands…”
“You and me. Hell in a cell.” The broadcast ends.
