The Storm

Graves is sitting on a porch, the location is unable to be determined. The only thing noticeable about the environment is that it’s raining. Graves lounges in an adirondack chair with a faded wooden finish, to his right is an end table with a highball glass just slightly filled with an unknown drink. The Hall of Famer is dressed down for the occasion, eschewing his usual suits and business-like attire for a more casual look of faded jeans and a gray polo. The only thing that stands out is his Hall of Fame ring, still displayed proudly upon his finger. He takes a sip from the glass as the camera focuses on him in profile. As he speaks, he does not address the camera, instead looking out at the rain.

Mark Graves: You never truly know when the storm has arrived. The rain falls so often in our lives that it has become a mild inconvenience rather than a force of nature. Every time the sky darkens and the first droplets begin to fall, we all think it’s just another minor drizzle, something to wipe off the windshield of our cars as we go about our day.

There are times, however, where we miscalculate, we underestimate nature’s wrath. When the light drizzle turns into a heavy downpour, when the mild breeze suddenly turns to a frightful gales, the puddles become a flood, the thunder turns from a gentle reminder to a harrowing warning, and before we have the chance to run, we are caught in the storm at the mercy of nature, wishing that we had been warned, that we had time to get to higher ground.

Graves takes a drink as a low rumble of thunder echoes in the distance. Graves sets the glass down and looks right into the camera.

Mark Graves: You, Alex...you’re taking the storm for a light shower. You have underestimated nature’s wrath. But unlike the hundreds that are caught off guard, I’ll do you a kindness by giving you a warning.

This war that we will fight on PRW’s grandest stage is about more than the past, it’s about more than the legacies that we have built. You can talk all you want about how I might have been years ago or how my image has waned over time. But I am not flaunting my accomplishments so I can turn back the clock and relive the glory days. I am doing this as a warning to everyone in the PRW locker room. I have returned to storm through the doors of this company and take back the place that I earned years ago. I say this not as an opinion but as a prediction. My rise is inevitable and PRW’s best have two choices, retreat to higher ground or get swept away by the storm.

Our battle is not about the past that we have built, it is about the futures that we will build in the years to come.

And all I can hope for you Alex is that you know exactly what you are dealing with. Because if you go in prepared for anything less than a raging tempest...well, then you best start preparing for coping with the humiliation of your defeat.

Graves finishes his drink as lightning breaks across the sky, quickly followed by a loud crack of thunder.

Mark Graves: The storm is coming, Alex. Are you ready?
