In the hallowed haunted halls of the home belonging to Tsukishima Shadow, eeriness was nothing new. Feeling discomforted by the sights, sounds and vibes of the home was neither strange nor unique for people. It wasn't called "Tsuki's House Of Jump Scares" because a bunch of video game marks live in the PRW locker room. The home of Tsukishima Shadow was and always has been a gateway to whatever horrors; physical, spiritual, existential or psychological. If the world is your oyster than Tsukishima's home is your graveyard. Despite its reputation for oozing walls, wails in the night and Tsukishima's poor taste of decor, the home had a certain romanticism to it. On a day like this when the sun managed to fight through the curtains and the birds could chirp loud enough to fend off the usual creeks and groans, it was a pretty comforting place. There in the study of Tsuki Manor was the woman whose soul seemed tied to the home and the man who spent most of his career renaissance living inside of it. Joey NOX and Tsukishima Shadow were finally seen together for the first time in a long time and this time they were....playing chess? As NOX stared off into the sunlight, Tsukishima Shadow casually moved her knight into the proper position to snag up a pawn. The move didn't register with NOX who continued to stare off into the distance. Realizing that she can get away with it, Tsuki casually moved her knight again and snagged another pawn. With a snap of her finger, she tried to get Joey NOX to join her back into reality. NOX shot her a look and Tsuki shot him back a smile, her knight tapping onto the chess board.
Tsukishima Shadow: You seem...distracted.
Joey NOX looked at the chess board in front of him. He was getting crushed by Tsuki and what's more, he was making it pretty obvious that the game was the furthest thing on his mind. He quickly made a move, pretty much not caring where his piece went so long as he made something to get Tsuki off his case.
Joey NOX: Not at all. Just focused on winning this game.
Tsukishima Shadow: Two years.
Joey NOX: Hmm?
Tsukishima Shadow: We were together for two years and you never played chess with me. You called it old and said I only played it because I was old and now you come into my house, UNANNOUNCED by the way, stroll in and want to play me in chess. Somehow I'm suppose to find this normal, Joseph because you tell me to. You do realize or understand how stupid this is, right?
Joey NOX: Can't two old friends with our level of history play a game of chess on a Monday?
Tsukishima Shadow: Deflect as you must, Joseph. I'm just a lot smarter than you are.
Tsuki makes a move, casually nabbing the piece Joey absentmindedly played. She looks it over and kisses it with her eyes on him, throwing in a little wink for good measure.
Tsukishima Shadow: Always have been, darling.
Joey NOX: You're a tremendous pain in the ass.
Tsukishima Shadow: I didn't ask you to come here, Joseph. You made that decision on your own.
Joey NOX: Not entirely.
Tsukishima Shadow: Explain then.
Joey NOX: Did you watch the PRW product? Superbattle? Like any of that.
Tsukishima Shadow: No---but if you're asking if I saw what happened to you then yes.
Joey NOX: Pirate.
Tsukishima Shadow: I gave PRW my body, they gave me a plaque. I have the right to follow whatever gust of wind takes me to what I need to see.
Joey NOX: Well anyways if you saw what Kurt Kiddo did to me then you know I'm not okay. I'm...something inside of me broke. Not a body part, not a bone or an organ or anything of that nature. Something beyond that broke. A wire got loose and I can't find a way to plug it back into wherever it goes.
Tsukishima Shadow: So then fix yourself, Joseph.
Joey NOX: Were you listening when I said I don't know how?
Tsuki points to the board and NOX looks it over quickly. Not wanting Tsuki to get the edge on him, Joey quickly makes a move; moving his Queen out to snatch up a bishop. He tucks it away in his hand and then gives Tsukishima a face.
Tsukishima Shadow: Are you sure?
Joey NOX: About what?
Tsukishima Shadow: Everything.
As she always knew how to do, Tsuki said a lot with a little at that moment. With a sigh, Joey NOX just casually shook his head. He clenched the piece in his hands tightly, gripping it tight enough to turn it to dust. He looked at the piece and set it to the side of the board. Tsukishima gave him a smile; one part out of history and another part out of knowledge that she once again had him. Joey leaned back in his seat and looked at the board, a confused grimace on his face.
Joey NOX: Tsuki, I don't know. I don't know about anything other than how I'm feeling. I haven't gotten the all clear yet from doctors but they think I'm close. Not close enough to Summerfest but close. The problem is that I don't know if that's a good thing or not. I'm not used to not knowing things. I'm used to either having an answer or punching my way to one. Do I want to fight Kurt Kiddo? I dunno. Am I retired? I don't know. Do I love you? Hate you?Don't know. All I know is that I THINK I'm not okay and I don't know what okay is anymore to even know if I'm right.
Tsukishima Shadow looks at the board and lets out a little "Hmm" and a sigh. She moves her rook down to take NOX's queen, Joey's face telling the entire tale. She lifts up the piece----and then pauses. She looks at Joey NOX and then back at the piece in her hand. She rolls her eyes and then puts the piece back, moving her rook back to its original spot. Instead Tsukshima Shadow moves a different piece, giving NOX a bit of a mulligan.
Tsukishima Shadow: Joseph, I believe you know what's right here. You're just afraid, aren't you? Afraid of what'll happen if things go wrong. You're afraid of what's to come and what this feeling is. For once you've found yourself in a situation where you simply don't have an answer anymore. You're shook but you know what? Maybe that's good for you. Part of being a legend is being a little afraid.
Joey NOX: I'm not afraid, Aki.
Tsukishima Shadow: You are. You're just a little too nervous to admit it. When you realize it and embrace it, your decision will become a lot easier.
Joey NOX makes a move, getting his queen out of a bad spot and picking up a pawn of Tsukes.
Joey NOX: Okay and that decision would be...
Tsukishima Shadow: Only YOU get to make that choice, Joseph.
And with a little click of her tongue, Tsukishima snags up NOX's queen with her other knight. She puts it to the side and leans back, eyebrow raised and smirk on her face.
Joey NOX: I'm reminded why I hate this game. And you. And this house
Tsukishima Shadow, sighing with a smile: There's the Joseph I know and loved once. Still think I'm killing you?
NOX: Yeah but I'm getting used to it. It's like an opposite version of rehab where the clinic makes you worse.
Joey grabs a piece, goes to make a move and instead just casually wipes the board over, sending pieces flying everywhere.
