Paladins never forget.
The scene opens to a shot of Paladin standing in a church. He is covered in lights of all different colors from the stained glass windows. With a sigh, Paladin steps forward, entering the confession booth and sitting down. This is his first time visiting his church: constant travel makes it difficult for him to find a parish he can go to every week. But, while he does not know the man listening on the other side, he speaks nonetheless.

“Forgive me father, for I have sinned.” Paladin crouched forward, his hands clasped together. “I feel that, somewhere along the way, my message got lost. I go by many names: Jack Rider, Paladin, PRW’s White Knight...but my goal has always been consistent. To save professional wrestling from itself. And somewhere along my journey...I’ve lost my way.”

“Wrestling has a sickness. Hardcore wrestling. Even though that vile promotion Extreme Championship Wrestling is long gone, thank God, it’s infection has continued to spread. Now, just about every promotion in the world features wrestlers jumping off of ladders and hitting each other with all sorts of different weapons.” Paladin chuckled to himself. “Wrestlers have become little more than glorified crash-test dummies, putting our bodies in danger for the amusement of so-called fans who will instantly forget our sacrifices the second we stop taking risks.”

“The truth is...I love wrestling. I would argue that I love wrestling more than anyone else I work with. I love it so much that seeing what it has turned into saddens me every day.” Paladin’s hands shook. “Wrestling, and the performers who live it and the fans who adore it; they all need me to save it from itself. And there is no better way for me to achieve this goal than to ascend the ladder of the biggest professional wrestling promotion in the world, PRW.”

“To do that, father, I have done some things I regret. Well, perhaps that isn’t the right word. It would be more accurate to say that I wish there was another way.”
Paladin turned towards the shadow on the other side of the screen. “Last week, I had a match with a man called Maxwell Alex. By beating him, I would be able to set the rules for my first title match in PRW. And while I would never reveal it publicly...I need every advantage I can get. The man I face is bigger and stronger than me.”

“Maxwell though? He is just this man’s servant. He fought me because he was ordered to. And yet, no matter what I did to him, he would not stay down.”
Paladin sighed. "I throw him through a table, and he gets up. I throw him into the ring-post, and he gets back up I crack my elbow across his skull, and as he did multiple times before...he gets back up. And so, I found a way to put him down.”

“It was one of the most horrible things I’ve ever done in my career. Don’t get me wrong, I fight for a living. My goal, no matter who I face in my match, is to hurt my opponent to the point where they don’t get up anymore. But I typically allow them to fight the next day. This time though...I crossed a line. I injured him.”
Paladin shook his head. “And the worst part is that I feel vindicated. Seeing him, lying face down on that mat, reminded me of my purpose. That I and I alone can slay the monster that rules over PRW. I did a bad thing, but I like to think that I did it for the right reasons.”

At last the man behind the curtain spoke. “Is that all you wish to confess today my son?”

“No.” Paladin said, his voice growing silent. “What I truly want to apologize for is the fact that I know this is just the beginning. Maxwell is far from the biggest obstacle I will have to overcome to achieve my goals. To beat others like him, I’ll have to do far worse things.” Rider smiled. “And I fear that I may soon find myself coming to enjoy it.”
