We open up inside the halls of the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. In a few short hours, PRW will be opening its doors for a matinee showcase for the fans in New York, pitting the best PRW action possible. The headliner is Ata vs PCS in a non-title affair as Ata deals with matters at home but right now, the focus is on PRW Hall of Fame resident and Summerfest 2017 headliner Joey NOX. A bandaged Joey NOX is leaning next to a wall, coffee in hand, a smile on his face as the former Undisputed champion shoots a glance at Stacy Cornbread. Speaking of which, ole Stace has her mic at the ready position with one of those made for TV smiles spread across her face. This is at this point second nature to the both of them, another interview where Cornbread is going to go into an early diatribe and then NOX will be left to his own devices. With a fake smile, Cornbread launches into her promotional best and gets this interview off the ground and ready to go!
Stacy Cornbread: Ladies and gentlemen PRW fans, I'm Stacy Cornbread here and needless to say I'm excited to be talking with Joey NOX! Joey obviously plenty is going on in PRW but as is often the case, I have to start by asking just why you're here!
NOX: You know Stace, we're in my neck of the woods. My old stomping grounds if ya would and just being in New York, being in PRW, it's a refreshing feeling! So refreshing in fact that despite the stitches on my head I figured I'd take a second to talk to you and PRW.
Cornbread smiles and gives a nod to the camera, adjusting the mic in her hand as Joey NOX calmly taps on his cup of coffee. With a grimace, Cornbread gestures with her free hand towards the bandage on NOX's face, her mouth moving to allow words to filter out as she does so.
Stacy Cornbread: Well I suppose that's as good a place to begin as any, let's begin with those stitches on your forehead. For those unaware, those came courtesy of the Los Ranchos Locos tag team, Ace Andrews and of course Allan Proctor who has made quite a stir on the iPPV scene.
NOX: I think you covered it well enough. Yeah, I got these from steel steps! Steel steps right to the face courtesy of the God Damn Ranchers! That's always a good way to start a loop in your home state, am I right? Bloodied in front of friends and fans? I....I mean short of getting stabbed I'm not sure how I could be having any more fun!
Stacy Cornbread: I'm assuming you wish to discuss that?
NOX: Nah, I mean....look Proctor's going to get his, am I right? Los Rancheros Locos? They'll get theirs too. Copperhead, Peckerhead or Turtlehead will get his and Ace? Well Ace is going to get his from The Big Dog soon enough! So that's that really for those guys but I hope they truly understand that I'm not through with them. Alex isn't through with them. My buddy PCS isn't through with them and I'm going to bet that Dougie from the Red River and Jorge Vera aren't through with them either.
But let's go back to that Ace/Ata thing, k?
Cornbread shoots Joey a look as NOX pulls himself off the wall. His posture changes and he puts his cup of coffee down. As Joey's fighting to prepare himself for whatever it is he's about to say, Cornbread jumps on the lead and presses on.
Stacy Cornbread: I mean I figured you'd want to discuss the stitches on your head. That would be the story to me!
NOX: No you know what I'd like to discuss? The stitches on my heart. Listen a few short months ago I was on my back in AT+T Park looking up into the night sky wondering what had happened. I woke up and saw that Jesse Drive had found a way to win the title that I didn't want to begin with. I said my journey was over when I won Superbattle but Summerfest meant getting greedy. I tried to get greedy and I lost. I...I failed. A MAN can admit failure and can learn from it but what do you do when you've learned all there is to learn. Stace, I've been in PRW since 2008. I've headlined three Summerfest, I've won Superbattle, I've won titles upon titles and have plaques upon plaques to bask in my accomplishments! I've done it all!
And yet that night I left with a broken heart. You know why? Because I grew up when that belt meant something. I grew up believing that the only way to be the best is to hold the gold and on that night, I couldn't say I was the best. I allowed another man to be the best wrestler in the world and that broke my heart. Seeing Jesse Drive wear the title hurt me more than Tsuki leaving me, more than my grandfather dying, more than any sports loss I've ever had and it hurt me more than when I lost it to Serial. You know why? Because there's no guarantee I'll EVER get back to it. There's none! My heart is hurting. There's stitches on my heart.
Joey's hands are moving around but he stops to put his hands over his heart. With a big sigh and a headshake, NOX moves on and Stacy is smart enough to let the big guy rant his way into a compelling talking point. She steadily holds the microphone and stares up at Joey while he moves around, his arms telling the story again.
NOX: And those stitches are healing at a time where PRW's title situation is a mess. Jesse Drive had the title and then in a flash, it's gone! Ace Andrews nearly kills him and the belt is gone. Then it's in limbo and it's up to Ata Tatupu to save the day. Ata's golden nine times out of ten but on this night? Not good enough. Now we can say that cheating happened and talk about exposed posts all we want BUT at the end of the day, Ata wasn't good enough. Ace was and now Ace Andrews has the belt BUT I haven't SEEN Ace Andrews around much have I! Now I know Ata's working on helping those in need so I can't begrduge somebody for doing charity work and being a humanitarian but after stealing the damn belt, you'd assume Ace would at least find time to gloat about it, am I right?! And you know what REALLY rips me up, Stace? THAT SHOULD BE ME! IT COULD'VE BEEN ME! HAD I BEEN BETTER, I COULD'VE BEEN CHAMPION BUT I'M NOT AND SO NOW I SIT HERE LIKE A DUMBASS WATCHING EVERYBODY ELSE DANCE WITH THE GIRL I WANTED TO DANCE WITH! LIKE A GOOF!
NOX throws his hands up and lets out an exasperated sigh. Cornbread goes to jump in but NOX cuts her off with a look and a stream of conscious talk that's reverted back to a more calm and measured tone.
NOX: And let's talk about this X-Division title picture real quick. Bane brings it back, he wins it in a ladder match, he saves the day. Great. It would be easy for me to just blast on Bane but he's at least out there and giving us reasons to remember him. Sup Owens? Alexander Owens you BEAT me! You're BETTER than I am and I just fought for the title so where you at?! Matt Stevenson, let's call a spade a spade here. You are being gifted a tremendous opportunity that you may not have earned. No brag, just fact my man. You have the CHANCE of a lifetime and you know what I BET there are people at home who want to see you pull this off. Every March Madness there's that one Cinderella story who makes it to the final four and everybody wants to see that team make it there to the finals and hoist up the championship. You said it yourself; underdog. We LIVE for underdogs in sports. And of course I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Inquisitor! I mean he kind of makes me redundant at this point given all the other legends who have come back! That's a HELL of a match, am I right? So where's the smoke at? Why can't I see any of those guys plugging the airwaves up with their words, sights and sounds?
Stacy Cornbread: I'm beginning to pick up on your theme.
Joey gives Cornbread a little nod and turns to the camera, arms at the ready. He cracks a smile and then rubs at his bandage, grimacing slightly. With his arms stretched out NOX talks, Cornbread fighting to stay in the shot.
NOX: There are so many great matches at Bloodletting that as a fan, I'm really excited. This PPV is going to be MASSIVE on paper. The fans want this to be big and so do I! You give me a lineup with THAT four way AND Ace vs Ata AND a LEGEND'S MATCH with Gunnar, the first man to ever welcome me into PRW, versus Alex LeBlanc? I didn't even touch seeing Mercer and Kiddo go at it again. I didn't mention the fact that those fucking Swamp guys seem to be back either! Lest we forget Mordrad vs Gates as well! On paper this is a great card but here I am sitting back and just....I feel like I'm more excited than some of the guys on it.
This is a TRULY unique time in the world where people have high expectations for their athletes. The wrestling has never been better and the world has never been MORE in need of great wrestlers! And you know what's really fucking cruel here, Stace? When I see a card like this, it hurts me even more because I'm not on it and I'm not on it because I can't even stomach the thought of it anymore. I'm looking at this card and all I can feel is that my heart isn't in it and THAT...THAT hurts me even more. All I want to do is fight and right now I'm staring at this show and I can't muster up the intensity to do it and it KILLS me. DEAD on the inside! I'm so hurt on the inside that a card like this just reminds me of what I'm missing out on! I'm excited for this and I'm paying for it because I can't be there and it hurts me to say that!
Stacy Cornbread: I can understand what you mean actually.
Joey's eyes get serious, his face focused entirely on the camera. He shakes his head and then motions with his hands while he tries to send this thing home.
NOX: So I hope everybody from Ace to Mercer on down realizes what it is they're being tasked with. I hope they realize how lucky they are to feel this rush again because I'm DYING to find a way to will myself back into this race. I hope they realize that the people who pay the money for these events are expecting the names to show up and ball out because if they don't? Well let's just say right next to my broken heart is going to be the broken wallets and the broken trust of the PRW faithful.
And with that Joey gives Cornbread a smirk, pats her on the shoulder and walks off. Stacy turns back to the camera and flashes that factory line smile as she cradles the mic in her hands.
Stacy Cornbread: Well PRW fans you heard it from Joey NO-
Like Zhao Weiwei, NOX walks back into the camera shot. He reaches over and picks up the coffee had had put down but then shoots a quick look at the camera. As Cornbread is about to chew him out for his unprofessionalism, NOX wags his finger at the lens.
NOX: You know what? Real quick I do want to say something to Allan Proctor. Let me just tell him this, alright? There are...there are some things we don't like to tread on. One of those is family and one of those is personal demons---and he's dancing on both. And I was a guy who once danced on those grounds and I paid for it dearly. So I want Proctor to just know this and I'm removing all the comedy from it. I just want him to know that whether it's me or Alex or PCS or whomever! He WILL pay dearly---and he's going to learn what regret truly means.
