-The scene opens and Alex LeBlanc is sitting down wearing a Graice Jiu-Jitsu hoodie and a pair of jeans. He looks calm and reserved while across from him, Josh Brunswick is sitting down in a suit and with notecards, the two sharing a quick handshake as the scene opens in the well-lit studio. There's really nothing in the room except LeBlanc, Brunswick and a backdrop, but somehow, it fits and feels like that's all we really need.-
Brunswick: So, I guess I have to start with the obvious question; do you want to touch on your conversation with Sonia Capasso? Do you want to address her request and her reluctance to allow you to compete or return to PRW on iPPV?
-Alex chuckles a bit and shakes his head.-
Alex: All this years and you still get straight to the point, Brunny. Love your journalistic integrity.
Brunswick: While I respect the hell out of you, Alex? There's a story here, and well...part of me wants those answers too. Why now? Why come back? You don't need to do this, Alex. You need to think about Jake, about the future. In parts, Sonia is right, young man.
Alex: And I respect that thought, Brunny. I respect that opinion and you know that ultimately, I respect you. Unbeknownst to a lot of people, you were always a close friend behind the scenes. Our families go on vacation together. You were at my kid's birthday parties. We rode together, myself, you and Nox for a lot of the East Coast swings. We've shared hotel rooms. I respect you more than anything, and you do deserve an answer, but it's not going to be the one you like.
-Brunswick shuffles a bit uncomfortably as Alex holds up a finger, trying to dissuade him from becoming combative.-
Alex: Sonia, a lot of people don't know, is my girlfriend's best friend. She was Sammy's best friend through high school and was the one who brought us together recently, after the hospitalization, after the failure of Project Horizon, after the custody battle and the stress and depression-related hospitalization. She's become the de-facto godmother to my child. Her heart is in the right place, and she does it out of love, but you can't change a leopard's spots. And trust me, I tried.
I went to Sonia's therapist, I spoke with her over the past week and she didn't tell me anything we didn't already know. We know that I have an addictive personality, we know that I have the spirit of a vagabond and a paper heart. This is all things we knew. But what that therapist said, and what Sonia finally came around to understanding, was that therapist found that in a small part, wrestling is what is keeping me alive. It's not so much as addiction as it is a coping mechanism. Some people have AA, some people have religion, but Wrestling...this business?
This business is my sponsor.
-Brunswick is noticeably uncomfortable as his journalistic ethics have flown out the window and he is now speaking to Alex as a friend, as a confidant.-
Brunswick: Isn't that dangerous? There has to be another way, Alex. You don't want to be a statistic. We don't need you becoming Eddie Guerrero . You have a son, you have Sammy, you have people that care. What's Joey saying about this? What's Sammy saying about this?
-Alex, sighs a bit and responds to Brunny.-
Alex: Nobody is satisfied with it, but I'm peaceful and I'm "right" mentally inside that ring. It gives me peace, it gives me a frame of mind. That said, I sat down with Sonia and in the interest of hearing her out and respecting the wishes of my friends, I took her up on that offer. I took her up on splitting things 50/50 and taking over International Planning, in order to stay close, to stay a resource, but in order to not be so close and yet so far away, Sonia acquiesced and we were able to come an agreement to work very select dates and a limited contract.
Brunswick: How limited is the contract? How many dates are we talking about?
Alex: Honestly, Josh? I'll be doing the big shows, and I'll be doing select house shows close to home or important to PRW from a promotional standpoint, but as man of my word and as to not hurt one of my best friends, I'll keep my talents off iPPV and not force her to watch what she considers to be my demise in a realm she's responsible for.
I won't be at every house show, but I'll still be around, I'll still be promoting PRW, and I'll still be pushing for the future of this business. Mostly, I've committed to Sonia to help them with International Planning, with growing Canada, with growing England, with growing Scotland, and with growing Australia and New Zealand. I may not work all the dates, but I'll be working to keep this alive, because it's kept ME alive, if that makes sense.
-Brunswick stops and asks a pointed question, laughing a bit when he asks.-
Brunswick: Why England? Why Scotland? Why Canada? Why Australia and New Zealand? I mean I know you have the Frequent Flyer miles, but you really are living up to the Vagabond and Gypsy reputation, champ.
Alex, matter of factly: Because I created Project Horizon with those people in mind. Because I saw Ashton Masters and have watched him grow on the Independents since it's closure. I have watched Sasha Dmitriev get signed by PRW from the streets of Liverpool. Because I watched Angus Cadogan and Monte Doyle day in and day out at the LeBlanc Fight Club, because I have gone to Canada, to England and Scotland, to Australia and New Zealand and I have been the one man who has taken the charge to put the scene on notice and make a name for these talents in PRW. I have been their advocate, I have been their voice.
I have been the "King of the Commonwealth", so to speak, and now that I have the opportunity, now that the scene is flourishing and we need to create new stars, I'm not going to turn my back on what I set out as a goal, or a mission statement because my promotion has shuttered. I committed to create stars and be a spokesperson for an overlooked scene, and I'll continue to be their champion.
Brunswick: I can respect that, but what about this business with Alexander Owens? Why him?
Alex: That's personal. That's a rivalry, that's a man who pushed me to the brink and brought me to the edge of darkness. That's a man who for my own piece of mind, I need to lock horns with again, because he got me at my worst, and fought like a champion, so he deserves me at my best.
He's the voice of Middle America, the representation of an old scene, of what wrestling was. Me? I'm not that guy anymore. I'll argue that I've never been that guy, and nowadays, I've got a new charge, a new mission statement, and a confirmed and contract-obligated mandate to cultivate a new breed, a new scene. If that means making things right with my biggest rival and easing the roughest of edges on my legacy? Then he'll be seeing me soon whether it's at one of those select house shows or one of those big PPVs.
Brunswick, chuckling: Does this mean there's one last title run in it for you?
Alex, shaking his head: It's not about that this time. It's bigger than that. It's bigger than myself.
