The camera begins focusing on the floor in a well lit room. As the camera moves, almost as if it's walking across the floor, we find ourselves slowly traversing the floor of this big white room with the sound of crunching somewhere off in the distance. The more we "walk", the more objects begin to appear on the ground. The objects? Tiny shards of glass. As we focus on these pieces of glass, the sound of an all too familiar voice suggests just who or what is at play here.
NOX: So apparently all this time I've spent wondering where my opponent was and he was staring at a mirror. Cool.
We continue to look over the broken shards of glass and then finally discover the source. There face down on the floor is a big broken mirror. Glass is strewn about and the white wooden frame looks like it's been stomped on. There next to the broken mirror, sitting in a chair is Joey NOX. NOX is wearing sunglasses, his Missing! shirt and shorts on. He lets out a disgruntled sigh as he shakes his head, reaching over with his hand to tap the frame of the broken mirror. After a few seconds of letting the scene settle in, Joey speaks while staring at the mirror and NOT at the camera.
NOX: Now before I get too invested in this, I gotta admit of all the places I expected to see you at Jesse, I didn't expect to see you droning about your reflection. I gotta admit at the risk of sounding mean, you almost sounded like Mulan for a minute! You know I expected you to cut your hair off and everything. And you know what? I appreciate it! I'm glad you came out of your special hiding area to give me and the fans just a little bit of your time. But you know what really makes me glad? I could almost hear confidence in your voice.
Now NOX turns to face the camera. He's got a big wide eyed smirk on his face as he sits there, calmly rubbing his palms together. Joey talks, each word oozing out of his mouth, each sentence carrying what feels like a hint of arrogance to it. The sound of broken glass crinkling under his feet accompanying NOX as he delivers his next verbal shot.
NOX: See Jesse sometimes when I face guys, I do wonder if the sound of my voice and the ferocity of my words leaves a mark they can't recover from. Words are like punches and after a while, people don't wanna get hit anymore. Sometimes I wonder if the mark is too deep and if maybe I do more harm by standing in front of a camera and blistering folks than I actually do in the ring. Jesse verbally I'm a ginsu knife and I can really cut some people up, you know what I'm saying? So as I'm standing there and I'm beating you over the head with words and accusation and insinuation and I'm as RAINING DOWN LIKE A STORM ON YOU, I gotta admit I got nervous. I gotta admit your response? Calmed me a little bit. It gave me reason to breathe.
As if to punctuate that, Joey NOX lets out a nice big sigh of relief and a smile. Once that's done, he gets a bit more serious, adjusting in his chair and giving the camera a stern look as he keeps talking.
NOX: You didn't run from the reality, Jesse. I guess I do owe you that much credit. You stood there and you acknowledged my words and even acknowledged your own reputation. Now THAT requires confidence, my man. Jesse you seem to still have the confidence that you helped you win that title and I'm glad. I don't want this to be easy! I don't want to just walk in there and say "I'M WINNING!" and then have no challenge! I need a confident proud opponent, man! People are going to pay money to see us fight and if you're not committed then you shouldn't show up, right? It's a waste of time and money, right? See this is about the sport and this is about the challenge, not about the finality! The pay off is always sweet but I think you'd even agree that the journey there is what makes it all worthwhile! And that's a perfect segue isn't it? Because you talked about YOUR journey to the title. How YOU think you've changed! Well that's awesome, Jesse! That's truly special but let me just tell you a little about me for a second.
Now we're taken away from Joey NOX and instead, the camera fades to a highlight reel. Everything Joey says is met with footage and images from the past of PRW. We're met with clips, highlights and reminders. Joey talks us through the highlights, his words as heavy as the images on the screen. It's like a walk through memory lane with the world's most agitated, arrogant narrator.
NOX: When I entered PRW, I was about the Black Suit Outlaws and I never, ever changed. I was about doing what I wanted and doing whatever it took to win. Surviving the harshest political climate since Golda Meir and Andraw Sadat were duking it out back in the day. I had to learn to make those sacrifices and do the things necessary to win. Maybe it was the small sacrifices like abandoning a singles run so Alex and I could re-write the tag team record books. When the Outlaws started to splinter, I stayed loyal to Alex LeBlanc even though I always believed I COULD be champion. And you know what, JD? I never broke my principles and in the end, I got the title I wanted. And I had to do a lot of things to get to that opportunity---I had to put Alex LeBlanc's leg into a chair and I had to tighten my grip on on a sharpshooter and I had to force him to submit to a sharpshooter to get the #1 contender shot! I had to beat up on Matthew Logan, someone I hated and despised, to win my first title. To keep my belt, I had to go and hurt my friends. I had to pin Alex LeBlanc in Atlanta. I had to stretch Serial, a friend and personal mentor of mine, in Greece. I had to RETIRE Adam Xclusiv. All of these, by the way, you probably couldn't beat.
And when I lost the belt and I had to reinvent myself? I dropped weight, got serious and won the X-Division title! I outwitted Terry Bukowski to retain my title, I battled Ninja MAGIC on a number of occasions and at the risk of losing my leg, I fought to defend my title bravely. I lost! I'm a man who always admits when I lost and after losing to Nina MAGIC, I lost to Mark Graves while still nursing a knee injury. After that, I took some time off and I healed up and I had to do what I had to do to get back into the picture. So I did just that! To get back into the title picture, I hurt my friends. I hurt Patrick Slaughter, I made Wrath cry, I offended Takato and Ata and Alex LeBlanc and Sean Aries I DID WHAT I HAD TO DO TO GET MYSELF INTO THE SITUATION AND IT PAID OFF! I WOUND UP EARNING MORE MONEY THAN I EVER DID BEFORE AND I GOT MYSELF INTO THE TITLE PICTURE ONCE AGAIN!
Back to NOX who has ripped off his sunglasses and gotten up from his chair. He's fired up and the look on his face and the bellowing he's doing suggests as much. Joey takes a few deep breaths and stares into the camera, allowing the audience and himself a chance to just catch their breaths. With a shake of his head, NOX goes back to speaking but he's not QUITE out of the rage just yet.
NOX: AND FROM FAILED SUMMERFESTS TO MENDING FENCES WITH THOSE I HURT TO TRYING TIME AND TIME AGAIN TO GET BACK TO WHERE I WAS, I NEVER LOST TRACK OF THE FACT THAT IT WAS ALWAYS ABOUT THE TITLE! I wasn't doing all of this just to REINVENT myself or STAND OUT! I did it for gold! I didn't change to paint my face up and act like I'm edgy, I didn't change because I quit doing drugs, I didn't change to be spooky or ride a new wave. It's always been about the belt to me. So Jesse, I respect when you talk about your accomplishments and what you see but understand that when I look in the mirror, I see a guy who has NEVER lost track of the goal and that goal was to WIN. So I respect you, Jesse! I respect the fact that you stood there and spoke from the heart on who you think you are. The fact that you spoke about your reflection and the power of the mirror to see what nobody else sees is amazing to me. The problem? Is that the guy in the reflection pales in comparison to the man standing in front of the camera right now. You can conjure up any visual you want, JD----but the fact is the fact. You know JD you like to talk about legacies but me? I cast a shadow and that show engulfs this whole fucking place. Your mirror and your reflection are just living in the shade I provide.
A much calmer Joey NOX snickers into the camera, one fist tightly clenched while the other is gripping his shades. With a big deep breath, Joey NOX puts his sunglasses back on. The camera gets in tight on his face, NOX's cocky and arrogant snarl reappearing on his face. After a second or two of silence, Joey NOX sends us all home happy by wrapping this thing up.
NOX: Keep your confidence up, Jesse Drive. Because I know I'm going to beat you and I want Summerfest to be special. In San Francisco in July, I want the best version of you; whichever your mirror says that is.
And with that Joey walks off, the last thing we hear being the sound of broken glass under his Nike shoes.
