Yesterday it was teased on PRW News that the teams for PRW's brand new web show "The Breakthrough" would be announced today. Well we are happy to have the FULL official team listing for all four teams, as well as the scheduled guest hosts for the first six weeks!
Ace Andrew's team, the PRW Alliance: Any wrestler selected must have at least appeared on one PRW show. He must have less than a year's worth of service time in PRW. He must not have any PRW titles on his resume and he must have never main evented a PRW PPV (iPPVs excluded).
Team Captain: Ace Andrews The former two time PRW Undisputed Champion, Ace Andrews had been asked to captain the team by Inquisitor and he accepted with glee. Known for his tenacious business savvy and wit, Ace Andrews is hoping to show off his ability to lead by taking one man all the way to a 20% pay raise. "That's the key here, if they do well, I do well" Ace said to PRW media. "If I do well, I'm making 20% more. That's the key."
1. Terry Bukowski Debuting in January of 2012, Terry Bukowski had laid waste to countless opponents during his time in PRW. His prototypical wrestling size (6'9 300 lbs) and background in football has helped land the neophyte on many a expert's list for top rising stars in PRW. Now Bukowski will be in a 16 man tournament to win a title shot, as well as $25,000.
2. Horestes Girotti The Italian born Horestes has amassed an impressive 4-1 record in PRW complete with two Cyanide title reigns. He also pulled off a victory over former X-Division champion Ninja MAGIC in Superbattle. Still, the victories have come with little fanfare and even less peer recognition. Horestes is hoping that a successful run will culminate in a $25,000 payday and some respect from the fans and his co-workers.
3. T.K Does it surprise you that Ace Andrews would select T.K. for his team? T.K has had a career filled with some amazing highs and some stupendous lows. Now on Team Ace for the first ever season of "Breakthrough" he'll look to string 12 weeks of consistent work together in order to win the tournament and 25 grand.
4. Dan Bennett. And here is the surprise pick for Team Ace. Dan Bennett, an XWA regular, made his PRW debut at Superbattle. He put on a good showing but ultimately fell short in his attempt at becoming the #1 contender for the PRW title. Despite having the ability to compete for any company in the world, Bennett opted for a spot on The Breakthrough in order to prove to PRW that he belonged. Ace Andrews begrudgingly obliged to give him a spot although made no promises that the experience would be positive for Mr. Bennett.
2. Alex LeBlanc's Team, The Guerrilla Warriors: Alex LeBlanc's team, the Indy Darlings: Any wrestler selected must NOT be signed to any current operating independent promotion. He also must have been limited to under five appearances on "major wrestling programming."
Team Captain: Alex LeBlanc[/b The current PRW Undisputed Champion known for his ability to win, his ability to coach and his insanely short temper. While many question his demeanor and even more question his attitude, no one can question the passion in which he brings to everything he does. Alex LeBlanc has been put in charge of the Indy Darlings squad. Apparently Alex LeBlanc took the term Indy Darlings to mean "guys who are athletic who have never wrestled in PRW" as his team is a tremendous mix of different talents.
1. Joey Ryan A well traveled veteran of the independent circuit, Joey Ryan was Alex LeBlanc's first selection due to his ties to the West Coast scene. Known for his immaculate facial hair and "sleazy" attributes, Ryan has never been able to solidify himself as a player on the big stage despite his respectable performances on the indy circuit. At a not so old yet not so young 32, the time for Ryan to make his impact may be running out. He's hoping that he'll be able to use the Breakthrough tournament to...well...break through.
2. Cole Konrad The next member of Alex LeBlanc's team is a wrestler but not necessarily in the professional sense. Cole Konrad, an accomplished amateur wrestler from the same school as the likes of Shelton Benjamin and Brock Lesnar, will make his pro wrestling debut through The Breakout. An accomplished MMA star for the upstart promotion Bellator Fighting Championship, Konrad is using some off time due to the tournament schedule of the company to try his hand at professional wrestling. The 6'5 265 pounder is 1-0 in tournaments after winning Bellator's heavyweight title tournament and is looking to keep his perfect record intact.
3. Dru Onyx Keeping with the theme of big men, Alex LeBlanc has added 6'3 325 lb Dru Onyx to his team. The Canadian born Onyx often known as the Son of Abdullah is a monster whose ground and pound style has earned him plenty of acclaim but very little bookings in the United States. Despite being featured on shows in places like Canada, The United Kingdom and Australia, Onyx has struggled to find a niche.
4. David Loiseau The Breakthrough is an attempt to start a career in some cases. Here in the case of Alex's final team pick, it's an attempt to revive a career. David Loiseau is a former UFC fighter. More importantly, David Loiseau is a former UFC Middleweight contender who fought Rich Franklin. After the lost to Franklin, Loiseau's career went into a massive tailspin. Loiseau's career is now relegated to regional fights for small scale MMA promotions in Canada and California. Having trained with David and hoping to give him new life, Alex LeBlanc is taking a risk putting an untrained wrestler on his team. Still if Loiseau's athletic traits and work ethic hold up, he could find the career resurgence he desires.
3. Joey NOX's Team: The Over Hill Gang Any wrestler selected must be 40 or over and have seen "significant" time in a major wrestling promotion.
Team Captain: Joey NOX A man who needs no introduction to PRW fans. Joey NOX is the current X-Division Champion and former PRW Undisputed champion and he's looking to show off a new side of his skills to PRW fans through The Breakout.
1. Fit Finlay So how do you build a competitive team when age plays a factor? You start with one of the best wrestlers around in Fit Finlay. A masterful professional wrestler from Belfast, Finlay found himself doing more agent work than wrestling recently. He had a cushy job as an agent for the duba duba yee before some guy from Cleveland got him fired. Rather than challenge Lebron James to a steel cage match, Finlay went to work plying his craft on the independent scene. Realizing that Finlay was a perfect fit for his team, Joey went and recruited him to be a member of The Over The Hill Gang. Citing Finlay's toughness and experience, Joey feels he has the perfect right hand man for his squad. A versatile and bonafide bad ass, Finlay will be have to work through a 16 man tournament to find himself back on the big stage.
2. Terry Funk When word got out that Joey NOX was looking for old school wrestlers for his team on the Breakthrough, many wrestlers inquired. Only one wrestler was committed enough to the point that he left 15 messages on Joey's phone, all professing his desire to compete on the show. That wrestler was none other than WWE hall of famer/NWA legend and ECW star Terry Funk. Citing deep financial issues that forced him to sell off the Doublecross Ranch, Funk begged Joey to be on his team. A sentimentalist at heart, Joey NOX selected Terry Funk. At nearly 70 years old, it's reasonable to surmise that Funk has little left in the tank. Whether Terry is able to use what he does have left to scrape together just 4 wins in the tournament to ensure himself a house as well as a spot on the PRW roster!
3. Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka Jimmy Snuka is nearly 69 years old. He's insane. He's absurdly out of shape. Yet for some reason, Joey NOX has selected Jimmy Snuka for his team. When asked, NOX sighted Snuka's experience and "calm demeanor" as to why Snuka will be a representative of his team. Snuka has apparently been training hard to stay in shape and thinks he can have one more run in him. He'll be given the opportunity to prove himself right through the Breakthrough!
4. Brian Christopher Do you look fly today? Well if you do, you're sure to be thrilled that the final member of Team NOX is "Too Sexy" Brian Christopher. Former 2 Cool tag team member and WWE Light Heavyweight champion, Brian Christopher has the resume and genetics to be successful. Whether he can keep his personal demons and inconsistencies at bay will determine how far he goes in the 16 man tournament.
4. The Onslaught's Team: The Foreign Dignitaries:Any wrestler selected must have been born outside of the United States of America. They must have a clean arrest record.
Team Captain: The Onslaught, Takato Kazama and Patrick Slaughter Proverbially known as the underacheivers of PRW, 2012 has been kind to the Onslaught. The duo finally got themselves over the title hump with a successful tag title reign. Patrick and Takato are known for their teamwork and gym rat-esque work ethic which they hope will lead to success as coaches.
1. Lord Hentai Lord Hentai was surprisingly passed over for The Breakthrough by Ace Andrews (Hentai has competed in PRW once before which would make him an option for Team Ace). No matter as the Onslaught went and picked him up for their team. Hentai made an impact by shooting his "tentacle mist" into the eyes of Sylvia Wrath on the latest iPPV. Whether Hentai is a flash in the pan act or a long term threat in PRW will be determined over the course of 12 weeks. Also how will Hentai respond to seeing Sylvia when she appears as a guest coach?
2. Kenny Omega So how does a born Canadian who lives in Japan wind up in PRW? The Breakthrough of course! Kenny Omega is one of the more exciting, unique talents in the wrestling world and it's quite possible that he'll steal the show with his antics. Essentially made for reality TV, Omega seems like the sure fire "antagonistic force" during the show. Don't let his personality fool you, Omega has the high flying wrestling chops to back it up.
3. Zack Sabre Jr It looks like Canary Kid's time as the only Brit (or is he welsh) may be coming to an end. England's Zack Sabre, Jr has become the artificial #3 Brit in the world behind Doug Williams and the Canary Kid. Sabre, Jr is a versatile wrestler known for his mat wrestling and occasional high flying. Zack Sabre, Jr is coming off a very successful tour of Japan's NOAH promotion and will land in America looking to add PRW to his list of wrestling homes with a successful tournament run.
4. Ulf Herman Perhaps Slaughter and Kazama saw the big guys on Team Ace and Team Alex and decided to load up. Their last team pick is the big German known as Ulf Herman. Herman has been a regional star in Europe from the "name feds" such as IPW or FWA all the way down to the smaller unknowns. Herman is reknown for his ability to brawl and his toughness. Herman may enter this tournament as the best hardcore wrestler involved. He's been regarded by some as the long shot for The Foreign Dignitaries but it's hard to imagine counting out a big nasty dude like Herman. He may be a spoiler but I'd bet nobody wants to wind up with this guy across the ring from them.
