Lioness Cup Night One Results
Friday February 24, 2012
Viejas Arena, San Diego, California

The first ever PRW Lioness Cup tournament got started Friday night in the Viejas Arena in San Diego California, being the only scheduled event in SoCal for the year it drew a capacity house just shy of twelve-thousand people. The fans were treated to an undercard mostly consisting of the freshest faces in the company to try to warm them up, but the main highlight was by far the almost-hometown boy Ninja MAGIC retaining the X-Division title over Takato Kazama with a Gedo Clutch pin in a fast paced match. There was a group of smarks in the crowd chanting “Eas-ter-Egg” after the bell rang, and if the A/V department is smart they’ll include this one as a bonus match on the DVD set.

-The Tournament-

After a very brief intermission Bob Saget went over the tourney format on the mic, explaining that there are two blocks of four wrestlers each competing in a round robin, with the winner of each block meeting in the finals. He was followed by a slick video package that played over the tron hyping each of the eight women competing, and after that Jenna Jett made her entrance to the ring. Not a very familiar face with the fans she got some jeers and a lot of cat calls for her black vinyl attire, but after getting on the house mic she firmly got on the crowd’s bad side. She put over her technical skills and promised that her clean sweep of the Lioness Cup starts right now, and drew most of her heat by name dropping Matt Logan throughout her short diatribe. Bella Quinn was the next one out to a positive yet slightly mild reaction, looking very determined as she stared down her opponent before the opening bell.

BLOCK A: Jenna Jett vs. Bella Quinn

Jett controlled the match from the get go, taking Quinn down hard and fast and moving in and out of holds with ease. After getting back on her feet Quinn still had a hard time countering Jett’s offensive, but she managed to catch her with a few arm drags and sweeps to avoid being completely out classed. Quinn scored big by catching Jett with a Double A Spinebuster, and when Jett tried to surprise her with a triangle choke Quinn rolled her back onto her knees and snapped her down with a half-size DDT. The Glaswegian marched over to the corner and climbed up the ropes, but as she tried to secure her footing for the Moonsault Jett sneaked up behind her and pulled out her legs. The fans could be heard cringing as Quinn dropped shoulder first onto the steel turnbuckle and fell back into the ring, with Jett immediately going after her.

Jett used a lot of rest holds to further stretch and torque Quinn’s shoulder, including a long and drawn out half surfboard stretch with the added torture of Jett’s elbow screwing into Quinn’s trapezius muscle. When she felt it was time Jett rolled Quinn over and started going for her Crucifix Can Opener hold, but Quinn desperately fought to avoid it. They struggled back to their feet and Quinn managed to hit a fluid STO to pop the fans. Meeting back up on their feet Jett quickly went for a floating Inoki Enzugiri but Quinn ducked under it and nailed a low dropkick to a kneeling Jett’s head.

Quinn started pulling her up but Jett surprised her with a Divorce Court arm breaker, and quickly started to grapplefuck her by moving from a full nelson, a half nelson, a cravate, a wristlock, a hammerlock, a double under hook, and finally back into a full nelson to set up the Dragon Suplex. Quinn’s response to all of this was simple, stomping the hell out of Jett’s toes to break the hold, and knocking her down with an overhead Pele/Prince Kick. Quinn set her opponent up for her finisher, the Uranage Suplex, but Jett countered with elbows to the head and went for her finisher, the Tsunami DDT, but Quinn slipped out to dodge it. Jett quickly followed up with a flying jujigatame armbar hold but Quinn dropped to her knees to block it, pressing Jett’s shoulders against the mat for a surprise three count!

Result: Bella Quinn def. Jenna Jett via pinfall

The fans were pretty happy that Bella Quinn stole the win, taking particular pleasure in watching Jenna throw a fit with the referee. After the match in the press room just past the gorilla position, Bella Quinn nursed her shoulder while being elated to pick up the first win of the tournament, saying that she actually is a serious contender for the trophy and that if anyone doubts her they should talk to Jenna. Jett stormed past the cameraman and shoved him back with a quick “Get outta my face!”

We went back to the ring and WRATH was the next woman to enter, feeling like a dainty rococo version of the Undertaker with a gothy entrance and a white Lolita-style joshi wrestling outfit. This being far and away the biggest crowd she’s ever wrestled in front of she looked nervous, but she was positively received by the fans now that they’re well aware that she is Sylvia Wrath’s sister. Regan Crowe was out next to a much different reaction, drawing mostly boos but with some cheers as well when she was introduced as the final PRW Women’s Champion.

BLOCK B: WRATH vs. Regan Crowe

As soon as the bell rang WRATH bull rushed Crowe and knocked her down, and continued to bounce her around the ring with boots and kicks and clotheslines and knees. The crowd got into it quickly as WRATH started busting out bodyslams, looking like a casa del fuego until Crowe high tailed it out to the floor. Crowe was pacing around and cussing before getting knocked back with a baseball slide, but as WRATH went for a springboard move Crowe grabbed her feet and pulled her down, smacking her face on the ring apron. Crowe proceeded to stomp a mudhole on her lesser known opponent before breaking the ref’s count, sliding back out of the ring to soften WRATH up with punches. She pulled her bigger opponent by the wrist and went for an Irish whip on the floor, but WRATH reversed it and pulled Crowe up on her shoulder to wake up the fans. WRATH ran with Crowe to ram her face first into the steel ring post, but the final Women’s champ slipped out behind her and shoved her face first into the post instead.

Crowe broke the ref’s count again and then dished out more punishment, controlling WRATH on the floor and scoring with a drop toe hold to the ring steps, and a Raven Russian Leg Sweep into the guard rails to a faint pop. Crowe ran back into the ring and ordered the ref to start counting her opponent out, and the official complied, reaching all the way to nine before WRATH rolled under the bottom rope to save herself. Crowe quickly started putting the boots to her, hammering on her until WRATH started pushing herself back up. But Crowe made sure not to give her a chance as she slapped on the Crossface, stretching WRATH out as the big girl squirmed. The fans got behind WRATH as she started pulling herself and Crowe to the ropes, but Crowe was wise enough to break the hold and drag her downed opponent back into the center of the ring.

She immediately put WRATH back into the Crossface and continued to work it, but this time the fans tried to rally WRATH a little harder and she fed off of it. She powered up and pushed Crowe out of the hold, and then decked her with a picture perfect Roaring Elbow for the biggest pop of the match. Crowe stumbled back to her feet and ducked a spinning back fist attempt, but then got caught and lifted into a fireperson’s carry. Crowe desperately grabbed onto the top rope to block WRATH’s finisher, an airplane spin into a Death Valley Bomb, and pulled herself over to the corner before the ref knocked her lose. She did tear off the turnbuckle padding and then managed to slip out of the hold, going behind WRATH to ram her forehead into the steel knuckle that holds the rope. Crowe followed that up with her version of the Codebreaker to pick up the victory.

Result: Regan Crowe def. WRATH via pinfall

After the match in the press room, WRATH was upset with herself, frustrated that she couldn’t put Regan away. She warned her next opponent that she will be more aggressive and ferocious than she was tonight. We went back to the ring and Gemma Traumaward was out next. The fans didn’t really know what to make of her, but she did win a few people over out of the gate with her bubblegum pink hair and Grade A Zettai Ryouiki. She was really cute and unlike WRATH had no difficulty with the fans, not really pandering to them like a face but playfully teasing them. Sylvia Wrath entered next to a huge ovation, still riding high from her big win over Alex LeBlanc at Tough Love. Sylvia was on cloud nine as she ran around ringside high-fiving people, shaking hands with a distinguished gentleman who now wrestles in Las Vegas, and swapped the traditional handshake for a hug with her friend and opponent before the bell rang.

BLOCK A: Gemma Traumaward vs. Sylvia Wrath

They started off on the mat jockeying for position, Traumaward showed off some freestyle-like skills as she maneuvered around Wrath’s body to keep her down. Wrath was outmatched technically but used her strength advantage to press Traumaward and break out of her holds, usually just falling prey to another hold. Traumaward also played around a bit, tussling Wrath’s hair and dancing with her a little in a Roman knucklelock. The best bit though came when Traumaward got Wrath in a waistlock, she unbuckled and took off Wrath’s belt and tried to towel-snap her with it, but she ran behind the referee for safety. Wrath kindly asked to have her belt back but Traumaward refused, “You didn’t get me anything for Christmas, I’m keeping it!” The ref then demanded the belt and Traumaward gave it up, but as Wrath was putting her belt back on Traumaward suckerpunched her with a spinning heel kick to the side of the head.

The fans quickly turned on Traumaward, and she just taunted them by putting her hands to her head to mime fox ears. She jumped on Wrath and started rolling her around, stretching her out into increasingly complex submission holds. They were very flashy but entirely impractical holds and pinning combinations, many of them lifted from lucha libre. Wrath was tied up so much she couldn’t even think about going for the ropes, so she had to use a lot of power to simply muscle her way out of them. Traumaward took her back down each time, but when she started to go for her finishing Buffalo Sleeper variation, the Cat’s Cradle, she wound up getting pulled onto Wrath’s shoulder. The number one contender powered up to her feet and rammed her opponent back first into the corner, following up with a powerslam for the Oklahoma Stampede to a big pop.

Wrath rode the adrenaline rush by hitting a procession of big moves, a Double A Spinebuster, a T-Bone Suplex, and a spinning sitout gut wrench powerbomb (the Doctor Bomb) for a long two count. She pulled Traumaward up into a fireperson’s carry for a Death Valley Bomb but she slipped out behind Wrath and took her down with a Tiger Suplex. They met back on their feet and Traumaward cut Wrath’s offense off with a Koppou Kick to the jaw, and when Wrath tried to sneak in a desperate Boma Ye knee strike Traumaward dodged it and scooped her up, sitting out to drill her with a Fire Thunder Piledriver. The fans were hot for the sequence while both women stayed down on the mat, catching a breather as the ref started a double count out.

When they met back on their feet they started swinging at each other, shooting with stiff kicks at first before turning it up. The final sequence saw Traumaward ducking a roundhouse, Wrath ducking a spinning heel kick, Traumaward dodging a high knee, Wrath dodging a Gamengiri and nailing a Shining Yakuza Kick, dodging a Koppou Kick and nailing a Shining Axe Kick, and finishing it all with a Boma Ye for the win.

Result: Sylvia Wrath def. Gemma Traumaward via pinfall

Sylvia Wrath got big cheers following the bell, celebrating for a bit before hugging her opponent. Gemma got a little applause for her efforts before leaving with Sylvia to the back. In the press room Sylvia said that she’s on a roll, that after beating the face of the company in Alex LeBlanc she’s going to win the Lioness Cup, and then win the Undisputed championship at Blackout. After she left to her locker room Sherri Taylor got in front of the camera. She put over her status as the female vet of PRW and then started talking about Emily Hart, acknowledging that she’s been around the longest after herself. Sherri said that it didn’t matter though, and then said that winning the Lioness Cup will be one more accomplishment on her already long record.

Sherri Taylor was the first out to the ring to boos from the crowd, and invited the fans to “stay pressed and obese” as she strutted to the ring. Emily came out next to a big ovation, endearing herself to the fans as she walked to the ring wearing Sean Aries’ Grizzly Blood t-shirt, posing for pictures along the way. They did the big match intros for the main event and Sherri forced Bob Saget to announce her as a five time Women’s Champion, the 2007 Diva of the Year, and half of PRW’s First Couple with Adam Xclusiv to a chorus of boos. Emily got a huge pop when she was announced as the protégé and “spirit companion” of the American Dolphin, but after Saget called her ‘Queen of Hearts’ nickname Sherri snatched the mic out of his hand and tossed it to the outside floor to cut Emily’s introduction short. Saget shrugged and left the ring as the fans jeered, and then the ref called for the opening bell.

-Main Event-
BLOCK B: Sherri Taylor vs. Emily Hart

Taylor was aggressive from the start, knocking Hart around with punches and hair whips until Hart started countering with arm drags. Every time Hart tried to work a hold Taylor would grab her hair or rake her eyes, so her only chance to score came with fast dropkicks and a big satellite head scissors takedown. She went up top for a diving cross body but Taylor caught her with a dropkick to the ribs, and quickly started working Hart’s torso with boots and knees. Taylor drew even more ire from the fans when she dragged Hart up by the hair for a rib breaker, following that up with a World’s Strongest Slam. She stood on Hart’s gut for a two count and continued putting the boots to her, kicking her in the side as Hart rose back up. But Hart caught a break when she countered an attempted kick to the ribs with a dragon screw leg whip, but her comeback was very short lived as Taylor reversed an Irish whip to the corner and followed in with a running shoulder thrust.

Taylor kicked Hart down to the mat and pushed her out of the ring with her boots, not wasting a second before she yelled at the ref to start counting her opponent out. Hart was coughing pretty hard and holding her sides on the floor, and as she started getting back up Taylor held the ring ropes open and waved her on in, but she opted to slide under the bottom rope instead to beat the ten count. Taylor dragged her up by the hair again and went for another rib breaker, but Hart countered out of it with knees to the head and then hit a surprise Moss-Covered Three-Handled Family Credenza for a big pop. Hart caught Taylor as she rose up with a running Huracanrana head scissors and attempted to follow that up with a Backdrop Driver, but Taylor blocked the move with a knee to the ribs and snapped Hart down with an Evenflow DDT.

Taylor almost got a three count from her finisher but Hart still had some fight left in her, so Taylor decided to squeeze it out her with a long, torturous body scissors hold. She rolled Hart over a few times for a pin but Hart kept kicking out, getting the fans louder each time she did. After about a minute in the hold Hart started shaking her arms and legs, swelling up the fans as she hulked up and bridged back in the body scissors to pin Taylor for a two count. Taylor broke the hold and pulled Hart up for another rib breaker, but as she dropped onto one knee Hart slipped out to her feet and stepped up on the leg for a Shining Wizard. Taylor stumbled back to her feet and ran at Hart for a Spear attempt, but Hart went behind her and took her down with a Wheelbarrow Suplex.

Hart pulled her opponent up and onto her shoulders in a fireperson’s carry to set up her finisher, but her body buckled from the weight and Taylor escaped with a school girl roll-up. She grabbed onto the shorts for extra leverage but Hart still kicked out at two, and when they met back up on their feet Taylor scored another roll-up, but this time she used it to set up a Texas Cloverleaf. Hart flailed around feverishly to prevent Taylor from turning her over to synch it in, and then started kicking Taylor in the head. Taylor held onto one of Hart’s feet as she climbed back up but Hart made her pay for it, nailing a step-up Shining Axe Kick to send her stumbling back into a corner. Hart got back on her feet but Taylor shot herself out of the corner and ran in for a Spear, but Hart caught her with a fireperson’s carry and snapped her down with a side powerslam to win the match with the Hart Breaker!

Result: Emily Hart def. Sherri Taylor via pinfall

The fans were really hot for Emily as the ref raised her arm in the air, she held her ribs with her other arm and then started climbing the corners to celebrate. Sherri walked up the ramp and gave a final defiant hair flip before disappearing, and Emily waved and bowed at the fans before leaving to close out the show.

After the match in the press room Sherri was all over the mic making excuses, she said that Emily got lucky and that her next two opponents won’t have the same luck. Sherri told Emily to remember this night in a few weeks when, “your junior ass is watching me fight in the finals.” On her way out she had a short but tense stare down with Jenna Jett, who then also blamed her own loss to her opponent’s luck. Jenna said that Bella Quinn better go buy a big steak dinner to celebrate because she’s never going to taste a victory as sweet as tonight’s. Just before she left she promised Bella that after she wins the trophy she’s going to beat her Scottish ass with it to pay her back for tonight.

Emily Hart was the last person to speak; she squeezed an ice pack between her arm and her ribs as she undid her wrist tape, putting over Sherri Taylor as “one real tough bitch.” Emily said that if she can beat the most experienced woman in the tournament then she can beat anyone in it. Lastly she thanked the fans in San Diego for coming out and said that she can’t wait to see everyone in Spokane, and finally said how cool it felt to be the one in the spotlight instead of just watching from the sidelines. She said she could get used to that.
