This is a fight for survival and he is losing, every muscle fibre in his body wants to snap, every muscle tissue is ready to explode. This is the worst pain he has ever had and it shows no sign of stopping. He almost passes out due to the pressure being put on but something deep down keeps him awake, fighting. His tongue reacts to the bitter metallic taste in his mouth almost making him sick, his eyes begin to water but he continues.
“Keep pushing Mercer. Keep going.”
The voice a reminder that he is still alive and able to continue. His body though feels like it is going through hell and got lost on the way out, his muscle burn underneath the suit and his body shakes in exhaustion but he doesn't give in. He doesn't know how too.
PRW 24/7
The match has been set but the contracts yet to be signed, but with both participants coming out in public agreeing to the fight there is no doubts about that happening. On Sunday the 5th of June Manik Mercer will square off against the man who has bested him twice, John Bane. Both men will be fighting for the X-division belt, with John Bane looking to keep it around his waist and Mercer looking to take it off of him, but there is much more to it that just a title fight, both men have managed to put their careers on the line.
The day starts off typical for Mercer, a 4:30 am wake up, food and then off to the gym.
“Why the 4:30 starts?”
Mercer: Discipline. I don't want to wake up at that time, so I make sure I get up at that time. Becoming the best isn't easy and not many people want to make sacrifices, I do. I don't eat unhealthy, I don't drink alcohol, I don't smoke or do drugs. I don't do any of that stuff just so I give myself the best chance at success.
It's clear Mercer has and insane amount of discipline and dedication, almost obsessive but it has paid off for the most part so far in his career.
“Have you always been this dedicated?”
Mercer leaves it a few seconds before he decides to answer.
Mercer: Almost. There have been times in my life where I have let outside influences get in the way of my goals.
Again he pauses.
Mercer: I wouldn't say they directly got in the way, like it was a goal of theirs. It's just sometimes life gets in the way and you lose sight of the bigger picture.
Sensing it was a touchy subject we decided not to press anymore, instead we sat and enjoyed the drive through the fields. Then we spotted a small building in the distance and Mercer alerted us that was our destination. It seemed the perfect setting for a guy like Mercer, there were not houses or other buildings in sight, a perfect fortress of solitude for one of PRW's most intriguing characters.
Inside the building wasn't much of a shock either. The walls pale and dull, the lighting mainly coming from the few windows scattered about.
“Why here?”
Mercer: Why not?
A perfectly reasonable reply but I wanted to try and get inside his mind a little, to try and figure out why Mercer is the way he is.
“Why do you feel the need to distance yourself from everything? Does being out here bring comfort from childhood or something?”
Mercer: I just want to be left alone. People are distractions, like you. With you being here right now it's a distraction, you're asking me questions and keeping me from training. People are distractions. I know you're not meaning too but that's the way it is, I agreed to this 24/7 thing, so I guess I have to work around it and try my best to keep doing what I do.
“I can understand that, but why do you feel the need to go so far away. There is literally nothing round here.”
Mercer picks up a set of plates with a rope tied through the hole, he then wraps the weights around his waist and begins doing pull ups. We watch on in amazement as he does well over 30, each one looking as tiring as the last. Mercer is 270lbs and is lifting an additional 180lbs, now the type of pulls are call wide grip rear pull ups and if you have ever tried them you would understand that doing five is hard work but Mercer was in front of us making it look like child play.
Mercer: I'm done with letting people close to me, all that ever got me was hurt. I was in a dark place a short time ago, the lowest I've ever been and I didn't see a way out. I stopped training. Hell I stopped getting out of bed, I'd spend 3-4 days at a time not leaving my bed. And in that time I didn't think about picking myself back up at all, I was so focused on not thinking about anything that I finally realised what had been wrong all this time. I let Suerte get close to me and that damn nearly broke me. Pecker, although we remain friends cost me a match, a match that would have sent my career soaring. So when I was in that dark place and I realised what my down falls were I started planning my rebuild. I had already started without even realising it, I locked myself away, I threw my phone, facebook, twitter, everything. Then I started training again, push ups and sit ups to begin with but it was enough, I'd do 500-600 push ups and sit ups a day. I found my dedication again and slowly I started to realise that I wanted to wrestle again.....
Continued next time...

When a men finds dedication it can lead to great things, but when a man finds an obsession he'll destroy everything that stands in his path.
Mercer: It's either going to be me walking away as champion and my career still intact, or it's going to be John Bane. I for damn sure ain't going to let it be John Bane. For damn sure!
Mercer is sat inside an ice bath after a gruelling training session. He always gives 100%, it is quite shocking to watch what he actually puts his body through. The weights he lifts, the stretches and the sparring all look painful but Mercer keeps doing it day after day. I wonder if John Bane is taking it as serious, he'd be a fool not too.
“So you called out Bane. Why was that? It didn't seem so much for the belt. What was the real reason behind it.”
It's been five minuets and Mercer is still in the ice bath, his voice hasn't changed and neither has his composure. His poise and dedication is one that I think I can confidently say will not be matched.
Mercer: I don't like him, I don't like his little fake behind the scene act, I don't like how he wrestles, I just don't like the guy and the fact he and Dixie are together goes to show how much of a tool he is. Now don't get this confused with jealousy, I'm 100% not jealous of John Bane, I do feel I've been robbed both times I fought him though. I know he hasn't got it in him to beat me, the company know it too, that's why they are allowing this match to go forward. Do you really think they would agree to the match if they thought the ageing John Bane has a chance at getting rid of the companies fastest rising newcomer? No of course they wouldn't. People all over the internet have already stated that I'm the future of the company, it'll all fall in place when the time is right mark my words. John Bane has no chance of taking that away from me.
“So you think Bane has no chance at all, even though he hold two, whether they are legitimate or not, wins over you. I'd hate for you to over look him.”
Mercer gets up out the ice bath and jumps straight under a shower head, the water that comes out produces no steam and Mercer tells us that the water is cold because warm water after an ice bath will lock his muscles up. He dries himself down and grabs his bag, inside he pulls out a large container filled with fish, chicken, rice and an assortment of vegetables.
Mercer: Does it look like I'm over looking him. You been here with me, what? A week now? Has my training ever look half arsed? NO! I train hard all of the time, I don't need to worry about over looking an opponent because I never overlook the next day. I have to work harder than the day before every time! If I'm not improving, myself! and challenging, myself! I'll never be able to beat anyone. I need to constantly change and grow, I need to get ahead of the me of yesterday just so I know for a fact all these other guys are way behind. I look at a guy like Razer and he isn't showing me anything he hasn't done for the past however many years. LeBlanc is the same too. Yes those guys are legends but how much can they really change now, how much can they grow? I'm improving every single time I step in this gym and if I'm not already on the same level as those guys, I will be soon enough. I'm the young lion moving through the ranks and the day is coming for me to take this pride over.

SKYPE CALL
The familiar sound of a Skype call fills up the room, Mercer opens his laptop and answers the call.
Mercer: How you doing Harley?
Harley: I'm fine thanks, yourself?
Mercer: I'm good. What's up? Training going well?
Harley: Yeah it's all going fine, I'm perfectly on weight so I don't have to worry too much about that. Anyway the reason I called is because I wanted to see how you are doing, you always make sure I'm alright so I want to return the favour.
Mercer smiles into the screen which proves the beast has a heart.
Mercer: I'm good, I just got the 24/7 team following me around shooting stuff for the build up of Summerfest and to be honest they ain't bothering me too much.
Harley: That's good to hear. You really should embrace the media side of things more, they love you and I know from speaking to people that you have quite the following.
Mercer doesn't respond, he just shuffles in his seat uncomfortably.
Harley: Soooo.. How are you feeling about your match? Have you finished your training yet?
Mercer: Yeah all the training is done, I'm just resting now and avoiding anything that will cause an injury.
Harley: So no sparring?
Mercer: Erm, well, I might do a little light sparring.
They both laugh together and it's actually nice to see this side of Mercer, all we seem to get is the big bad monster side but this is refreshing to see.
Harley: I knew you wouldn't rest completely, we're both the same, we're both fighters. I got to ask though, how come you never tried to enter Sparta? I've seen you spar against top guys and you look like a natural.
Mercer: I enjoy wrestling. Plus I'm still young, I have plenty of time to try it if I wanted to. Who knows, if I lose this match at Summerfest, Sparta might be my next calling.
Harley: If you lose? You're not supposed to be thinking about if you lose!
Mercer: Everyone thinks about losing, you can't tell me you haven't thought about it. Everyone does. The thought of losing will make me push harder because I know what the feeling after losing feels like.
Harley: Yeah I've thought about it but I've never planned what I'd do after it.
Mercer: I haven't planned anything, Sparta has always been on my radar, that's why I jumped to the chance at the opportunity of coaching.
Laughing playfully. Harley: And a fine coach you are, Sir.
The two continue talking for around 15 more minutes, some serious talk, some laughing and joking. Seeing Mercer talk to Harley breaks away all the walls he likes to build, watching him on Skype proves he is a man just like anyone else. The bravado and image he puts out is not an act but it isn't his full self, he is much more complex than he likes to let on.
Harley: Anyway, I've kept you long enough and I'm guessing it's late where you are. I'll check in with you again soon.
Mercer: Okay then, take it easy Carna. And remember a co-main event is just the same as any other spot on the card, you might get a little more money but the fight is just the same. If you push the pace she'll fold at the end of the second round, trust me. Keep your guard tight and be active on the ground, don't try and stall, your fitness is much greater than hers and she will fade. Best of luck with training, I'll keep checking up on you.
Harley: Aye aye, Sir. G'night Mercy.
The screen goes blank as Mercer shakes his head with a smile on his face.
