-Sitting by himself on a concrete bench, the cold air blowing behind in him during the middle of a dark and dreary day, fitting if ever a weather forecast could be, Alex LeBlanc is sitting wearing a red Detroit Red Wings jersey, the name "Larkin" stitched and imprinted across his shoulders. The dark denim jeans and the Timberland boots complete the look, but as he sits there with the PRW handi-cam positioned so it records him from the front, Alex speaks slowly, softly.-
Alex: There's a resilience that rises from deep within you. You can't define it, but you can feel it. You can feel it overflowing from the people who rely on you, the people who count on you and lean on you day after day. You can feel it in those people who proudly declare that they ride for you, they die for you and they bleed for you.
-Alex clears his throat a bit and then continues, cracking his knuckles a bit, uncomfortable.-
Alex: You had the foresight to take those blessed to know you well from infancy to industry, from a state where we were wet-behind-the-ears to a state where those blessed to have encountered you learned and became well-suited to survive the rigors of this life by having met you. Your name, it still carries with it the idea of being built on steel, muscle and sweat. You carried us when we were too weak to carry you.
-LeBlanc lays his hands flat on the concrete and he looks a bit shaken, gripping the concrete.-
Alex: Everything you taught me, everything you ever showed me, was built on dreams. You took a kid from Montreal who couldn't get right, and you embraced him, his unfit mother and his blue-collar, lunch-pail crowd grandfather and made them part of your extended family. My life, like this sport, became driven by the dreams that you taught me it was okay to have, that you encouraged my grandfather to tell me it was okay to have.
The people who would consistently come to you in times of need were driven by a desire to succeed, to better themselves and you never turned them away. You helped them understand that nothing worth having was ever obtained without hard work, dedication, and without sacrifice.
You witnessed my struggles, you were there for my shortcomings. We lived through every up-and-down imaginable. We've seen the lowest lows together; suicide attempts, rehab stints and failed marriages. But we also saw the highest of highs; the birth of my son, the accolades, the moments of glory that were yours just as much as they were mine.
-Alex laughs to himself and looks off, then looks back at the camera, the light shimmering off the glint in his eyes.-
Alex: I could never turn my back on you, because in a way, I am you. You built me, you moved me, you shaped me. Sometimes down, but never out. I often got my strength from you.
Today, I start paying it forward.
-The camera panning out, it's revealed that Alex has been sitting under the Monument to Joe Louis the whole time, the bronze fist hanging above and behind him, the symbol of strength and power through adversity, the icon of the Motor City.-
Alex: The California "experiment" is over, kids.
Time to go home and bring the success back with me.
