The sunshine of California is cascading on Sean Aries as he sits in a park. It's truly a sad sight to see, kids in the park skateboarding, soccer moms walking their dogs, lovers taking strolls hand in hand yet sitting on a park bench by himself is Sean Aries. To call Aries "sad" would be an overstatement given the lack of emotion on his face. He looks like a blank slate, like a video game character who hasn't been coded to emote yet. Who would've thought that things would be so bleak in the usually positive world of Sean Aries. We've seen Sean have teeth knocked out, had his skull split open and multiple matches with Tracy Smothers yet this is the low light. In his right hand, he holds his phone and in his left hand he's got a brown paper bag. The phone is on and in use but Aries clearly isn't paying attention to the conversation currently ongoing. Staring out into the sun, Aries takes in a deep breath and closes his eyes. "The Stoned Kodiak" is trying to center himself while an all too familiar voice is droning on and on about the situation Sean finds himself in.
"Bro I swear to gawd, we can fix this bro. What we'll do is we'll call up tha people in lucha in Mexico, we'll put 'er on da phone and bro, we'll bring her back to the States. Ya know that I can make it work, bro. All you gotta do fuh me is put in tha good word with the pee arr dubya folks and bro, we can make this work again. We'll get Emily back, bro. Sean? Sean? Bro you gotta answ-"
With a grunt and a cringe, Aries hangs up his phone. That may have been for the best for all parties involved given his emotional state and the quality of suggestions being thrown around during the conversation. Sean opens up his bag, peeks inside and then bites his lip with a head shake. He goes to put his hand into the bag but instead he just angrily shoves his phone into it. Sean leans back against the bench, staring off into space absentmindedly. Suddenly as if he's finally brought to life, Sean Aries pounds his fists into the bench and lets out the only word that could truly sum up the situation we find ourselves in.
Aries: FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCKKKKKKK!
Welp that's not great. Aries sheepishly cringes as all eyes are now on him, the scorn filled stares and gawks from onlookers who truly don't understand. There's a part of Sean that wants to just lose it on them and let them know how he feels. Sean Aries returns their glares with a glare of ten times the fury and his mouth opens to unleash a fervor on these people. Instead he thinks better of it, closing his mouth as his head slumps. To blow up on random onlookers and rant about his pain and sense of loss would be beneath him. That, in Sean's mind, is ground best left for the likes of Jesse Drive. He's always been above those moments of vulnerability even at his lowest. He's "East Coast Tough" but even a man who has been through so much in his life has his breaking point. As business slowly returns to its usual state, Aries just sits there with his jaw clenched and his eyes closed. Then as time ticks away painfully, Sean's greeted by a familiar voice that draws his attention away from sulking.
NOX: Hey there, pal.
Aries turns to his right to see frienemy Joey NOX standing there. NOX is rocking a BP shirt and jean shorts (!) with a donut in each hand, the sight of which draws a look of wonder and bewilderment from a mustachioed Sean Aries. Joey plops down next to Sean and offers him a sprinkle covered chocco donut, a gesture that draws a smile out of Sean. As Aries destroys this poor donut, Joey NOX just sits there in silence. Aries continues to wreck the chocolate donut while NOX just gives him a look and lets out a chuckle. With Aries wiping chocolate from his face (with his shirt mind you), NOX finally decides to cut the silence and get to the words.
NOX with a requisite sigh: So....how we holding up?
Aries: Resigned.
NOX: To?
Aries: The fact that it's gone. She's gone. It's all over, man. I built something and then it let crumble.
NOX: Come on now, it's not that bad.
Aries: It's not? I took YOUR like...whatever she is to Mexico with me. It cost me 6 grand for the entire fucking trip, Joey and I was fine going broke if I had to to find the person I loved. I went there to find her. I found her and then she shitted on me and you know the shitty part is that everything she said was true. It's like when you show up drunk at 5 AM to your parents house and your dad buries you for being a fuck up and you KNOW you gotta say something but you can't. So you just sit there and die on the inside while you get levels and levels of garbage dumped on your head.
NOX: Well look, you'll find another. You'll find a new gal to keep you happy and you know that there are plenty of fish in the sea. I've HEARD you have a relatively decent sized fishing pole and I imagine you've got the right bait to find that...carp or whatever.
Aries: You're not helping.
NOX with a grunt: So you want me to just let you sit around, mope like a dick and be mad? Come the fuck on, man. You wouldn't want me to do that. In fact when Tsuki LEFT me, you were the first guy to call in and check up on me.
Aries: I thought Alex was.
NOX: Well I don't even consider him a guy anymore. That's blood. You though were the first guy to stand by me and back me up because I really needed it. I'm trying to return the favor to you.
Aries: The favor?
NOX, sighing: Favor is a bad way to put it. Look I just can't let people think we're friends. We have history to upkeep.
NOX and Aries share a nervous little laugh between one another. Things have calmed down tremendously since Aries' emotional outburst and life has returned to normal. The laugh ends and both men sit there in the silence, nodding their heads and letting the smile subside. As the wind gently blows in the background and leaves rattle around, Sean Aries speaks up in an almost soft broken voice.
Aries: Do you know what my biggest fear is, Joey?
NOX: I'm going to assume it involves the Blk-Out.
Aries, ignoring him: It's in the future. I'm in the same spot I am now. Maybe I'm a little richer, maybe I'm a little poorer but above all else, I'm as miserable then as I am now. Grace is older and she's getting ready to go to college. I've packed up her car with all her stuff and I give her a hug and a kiss. Instead of being happy or grateful of everything I've done, she looks me and the eyes and says "I'll never forgive you for letting Mom leave." Then she gets in her car, goes on to live her life and I never see her again. I live my life through her instagram photos or whatever it is they'll have then. Dates and maybe a husband I'll never meet, Graduations and job promotion parties I'll never be invited to with grandkids who only know me by name and not by person. You know the best part, Joey? The part that really drives it home into my heart? She'll be right. Right about how I watched the best thing that ever happened to me walk out the door.
NOX: Sean, look, ya got closure. Everybody has that measure of closure and it impacts us differently. Still at least you got closure on the issue and that matters.
Aries: It just...I don't want Grace to live a life where she spends her entire time chasing a fantasy like a Disney movie of some kind. The parents don't always get back together and sometimes mom and dad stay divorced. NOX, you know I'm a fuck up but god damn if I wouldn't die for her.
NOX: Which her we talkin' now kid?
Aries: How about both?
NOX: But in your mind, it's all about Grace.
Aries: Damn it, Joey! I don't know okay?! I DON'T KNOW! I WANT EMILY IN MY LIFE! I WANT MY KIND OF SORT OF WIFE! I WANT GRACE TO BE HAPPY! I WANT THE FAMILY THAT I NEVER HAD BEFORE BUT WORKED SO HARD TO BUILD TO GET BACK TOGETHER! I WANT PRW TO BE GOOD! I WANT RAZER TO DEFEND HIS TITLE FOR ONCE! I WANT FUCKING THINGS TO BE BETTER AND HERE I AM IN CALIFORNIA EATING FUCKING DONUTS AND HATING MY LIFE! WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT SAY ABOUT ME?!
NOX sighs and rubs his eyes. Realizing how open Aries is being with him, Joey NOX claps his hands together and turns to face Sean. There's a lot of history between these two from NOX hating Aries to NOX hating Aries some more to them pretending not to hate each other to passive aggressive hatred and the eventual a state of like. Right now though, Sean Aries is looking at Joey NOX as a friend. Whatever quibbles or issues they believed they had back in 2012 or 2013 simply didn't matter. This was an unspoken cry for help and NOX had to do what was right.
NOX: Look man I've been here with Alex in the past. I've sat here and listened to him say the same things you're saying and my heart has bled for him the same way it does for you right now. It's that fear that I can't relate to. I don't have a kid who relies on me to be their flag bearer, man. I'm nobodies hero, not even my own. I'm just a guy who happens to be good enough to wrestle and make money for it. When you guys talk about your kids, when you talk about finding love and finding a mother, when you talk about all of that stuff man? It's like the Lord Of The Rings. "Don't Go Where I Can't Follow You!" You guys do things differently than I because, well, you guys have people who think you're their world. The best I can do for you is what I do for Alex when he's in this spot.
Aries: And that is?
Joey NOX thows his arms around Sean Aries and pulls in the Stoned Kodiak to give him a big hug. Letting Sean's head rest on his shoulder, Joey NOX gives him a few heartfelt pats on the back.
NOX: Everything is going to be okay.
