On Saturday and Sunday, the NFL divisional round will kick off with eight teams attempting to take one step closer to their dream of playing in a super bowl. Eight teams will step onto the field and four will move one step closer while four will be left packing their things, wondering if they'll ever get another opportunity. In Texas, two wrestlers will be competing in their own super bowl as Joey NOX takes on Carlos Cruz in a mammoth contest of epic proportions for both. For Carlos Cruz, the chance to write the wrongs of his past lay in front of him. For Joey NOX, the chance to show he hasn't lost a step in the ring is there for the taking. After Carlos' latest video package, I suppose it's no surprise that we're greeted by Joey NOX standing in front of a PRW camera. Despite the location being familiar, Joey NOX in the early mornings standing in front of a building in the great state of Texas. Things are a bit different now though. Joey's eyes seem a bit more fiery as he's standing there, palm in palm with hands rubbing together anxiously. He shakes his head slightly as he lets the visual set in, his usual cocky smirk and calm demeanor instead turning to a snarl. After a few seconds, NOX begins to speak and his calm voice has almost been replaced by a somewhat more direct and forceful tone.
NOX: My grandfather was a great man, he was a religious man. In a way Carlos reminds me of him and I guess that's where my sympathies lie, you know? See what I remember most about him was the fact that he didn't speak much but when he did, he never wasted his words. One of his favorite saying he'd always tell me is that everybody can make a mistake but it's a man who proves the value of his soul when he admits to those mistakes. It always stuck with me, Carlos. So let me say before you, before the world and before the man himself watching down upon me that I made a mistake.
I should've never picked you, Carlos.
What? NOX pauses momentarily, the overcast sky setting for a perfect backdrop as Joey scowls into the camera.
NOX: See Carlos, you need to have a level of commitment required to make it to the top. I know you've never won a big match before in your life so to you that might be a foreign concept but let me explain as clearly as I can. I'm doing things differently for this one because guess what? That's what winners do for a match like this. You know what Jesse Drive and Alex LeBlanc are doing right now? They're in the gym. They're watching tape. They're putting in the heavy hours to promote this and be the stars they claim to be. They're not viewing this as just another day in the park because THIS MEANS SOMETHING TO THEM! LOOK AT ME! I'm down here in Texas. I've been in the gym non-stop since the time I sad yes to this. I've been working my ass off giving you 100% of me because I THOUGHT you wanted this as badly as you claimed BEFORE I showed up on the scene. I really convinced myself that GOD damn, I needed to give Carlos this chance. I went into a training camp for this, getting in shape and showing up at a weight lower than I've ever been before I even got into PRW and I committed myself to this. I committed myself TO YOU. I went and did everything and to quote Nebraska Jones, "I'm not shaving my legs for this to not be worth it!" So what are you doing?
Having a fucking wine and crackers party with your parents? Are YOU kidding me?! You're trying to play to that biblical demgraphic with Last Supper analogies? Comparing yourself, indirectly because if you tried to do it explicitly lightning would've burned you and that fancy dinner down to the ground almost to a Christ like figure? I don't see you training! You look the same BEFORE I stepped onto the scene as you do now. I don't see you in the ring working yourself into the kind of shape you need to be for a match like this. Look, let me tell you it doesn't take much to get in front of a computer and pen an open letter because I've done it before. It takes A LOT more for a man to get in the ring and admit his flaws. I'm not dieting and training and being the best I can possibly be because I think I'm good enough as is. That's a MAN telling you that he's working to correct the weaknesses in his game. ONE MAN IN THIS MATCH WANTS IT, CARLOS!
The other is having a nice dinner with Papaito and Mami.
Joey pauses and takes a big deep breath, letting the air out slowly. He focuses himself back on the camera, palms no longer rubbing together as his hands have been flying every which way with every word he's thrown out. Feeling the Texas sun (even in winter) on him, Joey NOX continues onward.
NOX: So that's why I made a mistake, Carlos. I picked you for a role that you clearly weren't the guy for. I could've picked Jesse or Manik or Sean or Razer or somebody who gave a damn the way I clearly give a damn. I overestimated your want to. I overestimated your desire to be as good as you claim. That's on me and I've got the big shoulders to weigh that on my conscience. You say I talk in riddles or analogies or big words well I'll just drop those and get right to the point for you then, k? You are a fraud. You are a FAKE. You are a FALSE PROPHET TO YOUR OWN PEOPLE AND YOUR OWN FAMILY! YOU TOLD THESE PEOPLE THIS WAS YOUR DREAM AND ALL YOU'VE DONE IS SET THEM UP FOR A NIGHTMARE! YOU ARE FAKE!
Welp, shit. NOX takes a second to collect himself as his face goes redder and redder with each word. Now practically screaming in the middle of a sidewalk in broad daylight, Joey stops to center himself a little. With a returning smirk, he speaks calmly and with his hands nearly trembling from the passion inside.
NOX: Carlos, listen to me very carefully because I want there to be no communication gap between you and I. The history books say who won and lost. The historians, the ones who tell the tales, they provide the context. If your attitude is what it is now? All it's going to say in the history books is that you failed in the ring against me. There's no shame in that. The historians though? Oh they're going to tell the tale of a man who tucked, puckered and DIED in that ring. Not on a physical level but on a spiritual and emotional one. They're going to talk about once again Carlos Cruz had a major opportunity to BE ELITE AND ONCE AGAIN CARLOS CRUZ FAILED! This time though? He didn't even have the heart to try. This time, he didn't have the heart to give it his all. He just went out there, got beat, got crushed, went home and cashed his check. A failure. A fraud. A broken shell of a human being who, in the words of Li Shang proved to ultimately be unsuited for the rage of war. How sad is it going to be when Carlos Cruz is a few sentences in the autobiography of Agustin Gates when all is said and done?
You can quote the bible all you want Carlos but this is real life right now, my man. This is me coming at your soul right now and asking you JUST how bad you want this. This is a grown man punching you verbally in the mouth and asking if you're going to just stand there, look stupid and bleed or are you going to FIGHT ME? This is me looking you in the eyes and asking you man to man if your heart is in this right. Do you want to be the man you claim to be? Or are you prepared to be the dude who has the match after intermission? I believe I made a mistake thinking it's the former.
It's up to you to prove to me that it's the latter.
As if he's disgusted by the thought, NOX just angrily scoffs, rolls his eyes and walks off.
