NOX: Let me take you on a journey, Carlos
Those are the first sounds to greet the viewer. Before imagery, before the setting, before the theme...we have the voice of Joey NOX. It's cold, calm and perhaps a little dry given the circumstances. In a few days, each one feeling shorter than the last, Joey NOX will meet Carlos Cruz in a clash of PRW eras and ideologies. We get a visual now, Joey NOX standing in front of a large opulent building, bundled up appropriately for the winter weather. He exhales and watches the breath before his eyes with a sudden wonder. As NOX adjusts his leather coat, he begins to talk, his eyes on the camera.
NOX: You're walking down the street through the BX, looking to pick up something for your mom. You go into a new store in thearea, you get the item, you bring it to the counter and pay whatever the amount is to get it. Suddenly though the clerk looks at you and cocks his head. He squints and says "Oh, you're Carlos Cruz, aren't you? Wow, I'm a big fan of yours! Best of luck vs Joey NOX at Salvation!" You leave the store and you've got your bag and now you're heading home. The problem is that each step you take, somebody else new comes up to you and says something. Maybe it's the lady stepping up to you whose known you since you were a kid saying "Carlos, Joey NOX is a bad man! I know you're going to win but....I sure hope you don't get hurt in there!" Or maybe it's that old childhood friend saying "Carlos, none of us has ever made it but with a win vs Joey NOX, you can make it!" Maybe it's that kid who comes to your church every single day saying "Carlos, I believe in you! I believe you can beat Joey NOX!" All these people, all these voices, all of them telling you in so many ways that they believe in you and want you to win. All these people telling you just how impossible the task is with their eyes while their words tell you just how much they believe you can do it.
Joey lets a quick burst of winter air run by him as he talks, slowly pacing back and forth now amid the cold air. With a hint of deepness to his voice, he continues to speak and tell this tale for Carlos Cruz.
NOX: Ya see now your head is starting to swim, Carlos. Your chest is getting heavy. You stop and think about it---how nobody you know has ever made it. How even your family, even your own blood, is looking at you hoping for something special. How you've become the Advincola flg bearer. You think about all the people who you give hope to. Who you inspire. The people who have never left the Bronx and who never will who look at you and say "Damn, at least somebody got out of here!" The thoughts are making you feel so many different emotions at once and you can't help but feel a bit overwhelmed. Your heart starts to beat a little more frequently, you get that feeling in your throat you just can't cough out. You walk faster, you're not sure if its nerves or if you're about to have a breakdown. You don't know if it's excitement or fear corroding your body. Then you look up and BAM! Right in your face is a big billboard with your face on it and my face on it. "SALVATION! OUR BOY CARLOS CRUZ VS JOEY NOX!" it reads and your heart stops.
All of these people...all of these people are counting on me to do the unthinkable.
Joey pauses and lets the words filter into the cold, unforgiving afternoon air. Like his breath, the thoughts slowly dissipate into the open, Joey's eyes locked on the camera. NOX doesn't look angry or trolling or anything other than deep and focused. With reddening cheeks, Joey NOX continues to speak in that calm, focused manner, his words with purpose and drive.
NOX: See Carlos, if you have a pulse in that body of yours, my words have probably made your heart skip a few beats. Maybe its made your hands shake and your voice to tremble a little bit. That's all normal, Carlos. Those are feelings that I have felt time and time again in my life. It's the feeling of expectations. It's the feeling of the weight of the world resting on your shoulders. It's pressure, Carlos. It's a pressure you sort of have to accept in your life to be great. When I went out there at Summerfest vs Matthew Logan, I felt that pressure. It was on my shoulders weighing me down. SOME people embrace that pressure and they take it in for themselves. When that pressure was on my shoulders, I rose up to it and I won. I beat Matthew Logan for the title and every fight after that, I've had pressure. From Alex LeBlanc to Serial to Bukowski to Xclusiv to Slaughter to Wrath, there's been that pressure on me and I've risen to that occasion every single time. Some people love that pressure, some people thrive on it.
Now as for others? Well they will run from it. Some men can't handle the eyes of responsibility upon them. Some of them just can't put the burden on their shoulders and they can't handle the expectations that people and organizations thrust open them. Some people will simply run from it----like you have. See Carlos I don't think it's a coincidence that when PRW has looked to you the most to be the man, you've found ways out of that responsibility. When PRW looked to Carlos to become a young star, you panicked and formed the Renegades. When the Renegades was done killing your stock, you and PRW worked to build it back up....and then when you were on the verge of another big step, you killed it. Again. You ran from that responsibility and ran and ran and ran until you eventually ran yourself out of PRW entirely. To your credit, you came back in and once again you've built yourself up.
So the question I have is a simple one, Carlos. Are you planning to run again?
NOX smirks, the wind whipping around him as he speaks. With a pointed gloved finger, Joey NOX raises the tenor of his voice and as he does so, so to does he raise the seriousness of the words he's putting out there.
NOX: When you realize all of the PPVs sold on our names and all of the people want to see us fight and bought tickets....will you run?
When you feel the weight of the people who believe in you to beat a guy who has lost just TWICE since 2013....will you run?
When you realize that IF you lose, you will have to look in the eyes of every single fan who believes in you because like you they're a little undersized or a little different or don't look like the men on the magazines or the guys on TV and tell THOSE PEOPLE THAT YOU FAILED.....will you run?
When you realize that standing across from you in that ring will be me....will you run?
When you realize that your career LIVES OR DIES on this match and there is NO way to recover from this....Will. You. Run?
Carlos there's only two ways you can answer this. There's a yes and there's a no. If the answer is yes then I respect you for your honesty. I respect you for being willing to say you will run from the chance to be great once again. If so though? Don't show up. Don't even bother coming to the arena. Spend your time doing something else because I will personally break your neck if you walk into that building with one foot already out the door and onto the plane ride home. Do not waste my time like that. If the answer is yes. If you will? Just stay home and nobody will think any less of you.
If the answer is no? If you're going to be the Carlos I think you can be and if you're going to be the man who people seem to think you can be and if you're going to FIGHT ME every step of the way?
NOX smirks and scoffs, the cold wind whipping in the background. With serious eyes and a deadly serious voice, Joey NOX ends the entire segment.
NOX: Then I'd say you and I are going to have a hell of a time come Salvation.
