It's backstage at a PRW house show and perhaps surprisingly enough, the focus of this segment isn't on the action in the ring or on the young talents trying to prove themselves. Instead the focus resides on the backstage area where in a hallway, Stacy Cornbread stands by with Joey NOX. Cornbread is dressed in some fine backstage business casual attire which suggests that she's probably doing interviews for some spot TV ads. Or maybe she's just a snazzy dresser all the time. Whatever the case may be with Cornbread, Joey NOX is in jeans and a perhaps too snug "New Year, New Pair" Brilliant Pair t-shirt. NOX runs his hands through his hair and grimaces as Cornbread smiles into the camera in front of them, her eyes and plastic-y smile signaling the beginning of the promo is approaching. As Joey cringes, Stacy speaks in a perky and welcoming voice to the camera.
Stacy Cornbread: Well ladies and gentlemen, I'm backstage during a tremendous night of PRW action and I guess the old saying is true in that you never really do know who you might find at a PRW event! Today, I've bumped into PRW legend and hall of famer Joey NOX! Joey, you normally don't come out to events like this so what gives?
Joey NOX: PRW events? I work for the company, Stace.
Stacy Cornbread: Well I actually meant house show events. Normally you avoid house show events where some of PRW's BEST action happes. It's nice to see you here! What uh, brings you out?
NOX: Well Stacy, I have to admit that more often than not, you wouldn't find me backstage at a non-televised event BUT it's the new year so why not try a new thing? To tell you the truth, I actually came here in hopes of finding you.
Stacy Cornbread: Finding me?
Joey nods his head and shrugs. Cornbread looks at him befuddled as NOX continues on, calmly speaking to her and not at her.
NOX: See I was beginning to feel a little let down by my opponent at Salvation. You know Carlos Cruz? Yeah, I was beginning to feel a little let down by him so I thought I'd mosey on by and give a few words. Maybe spark something.
Stacy Cornbread with the slightest hint of confusion in her voice: Well what's disappointing about Carlos?
NOX takes a deep breath and opens his mouth to say something. He stops, sighs and cringes slightly. Taking a second to collect himself, Joey NOX gives Cornbread a smile and then speaks with an air of buoyancy to his words.
NOX: You know Stace when I agreed to face Carlos I had some hopes that he'd maybe bring something new to the table. I dunno what it is about him but everytime I expect Carlos to unleash his guns on me, I get disappointed when he just makes it so polite. Maybe Carlos really is a guy who has that positive mental energy belief about him. Maybe he just can't talk bad about somebody or maybe it's the fact that he talks like a cartoon character out of the 1950s. I'm not sure what it is it to be honest but everything Carlos says just lacks that bite, you know? I mean here I am trying to give this guy the biggest opportunity of his life, an opportunity he chased and begged and pleaded for and yet...he's giving me nothing? Everything he says is about how good of a match this is and duh? I mean isn't everyone aware that this is going to be a great match?
So I got to thinking. I started thinking that maybe I needed to spruce things up a bit. Maybe I needed to challenge Carlos mentally and get his engine revving up a little bit. Maybe Carlos is a bit like Alex LeBlanc you know? Sometimes Alex needs to be told he's an asshole before he lays into you. So I started thinking of things I could say that would be both truthfully, potentially at least, and stiff to the point where Carlos might fire up a little bit. I don't want to degrade Carlos' name of course BUT I'm more than happy to call a spade a spade on this one. Ya got me, Stace?
Stacy Cornbread: I believe I'm following, yes.
NOX: Like I could say the only reason Carlos is back is because PRW's roster got so thin they needed somebody who would work for cheap and keep up a hectic schedule, not because they actually wanted him back. Or I could've said that Carlos Cruz came back to PRW because his attempts to make it on his own exposed him as a talented yet stupid malcontent that couldn't hack it on his own.
Cornbread cringes as NOX mouths "just saying" to the camera. Joey flashes a smirk and then immediately gets back to talking as quickly as he can to prevent Cornbread from getting back in control of the interview.
NOX: How about the fact that Carlos is practically winless in matches with top competition? Hell I could've even said that with Agustin Gates seemingly talking more and more and gaining more and more notoriety, it means that Carlos Cruz may not even be the most talented guy in his own family?
NOX smirks and arches an eyebrow, Cornbread cringing the entire time. Joey moves the microphone closer to his face. NOX is "feeling it" now and he continues onward, his hands gesticulating to help prove his point.
NOX: See I could've said ALL OF THESE THINGS but Carlos went and surprised me! He came out with his sit down with Stevenson and he said some stuff that really got me eyes opened. He said some things that really did prove to me that he wants this as bad as he claims. He's getting that swagger back, folks. He's getting that heart back and his comments have made me realize that he wants as bad as I hoped he did. Now of course I don't agree with everything Carlos said but unlike a lot of people in PRW, I don't need to spend twenty minutes talking to prove my point. I've got NO time to stand around talking for forever so I'll just my point as quickly as I can.
Carlos, you talked about not being my welcome back mat. That's true. You're not a welcome back mat because guess what? I've never even left. You're a religious guy so I KNOW you're familiar with the idea of omnipresence. I am the epitome of that, Carlos. I've been in PRW even when I'm not in the ring. Every single time one of your little comrades called me out, every time YOU called me out, every time a show happens and people ask "wouldn't this be better if Joey NOX was in a match?!" Yeah Carlos, yeah I never left PRW. You people made sure of that. I run PRW and all I did was let you people keep my name alive while I lurked and trained every single day. All I've done is gotten better, I've trained harder, I've changed EVERYTHING about myself because YOU and PRW deserve the very best of me. You called me a torch bearer? No see Carlos, I'm a gatekeeper to the elite of PRW. You beat me? You're in that category of elite. You lose? You go BACK down to the minor leagues and back down to the undercard. There is NO middle ground, you are either elite or you are not! I KNOW THAT I'M ELITE, CARLOS! THEY DON'T PUT THE LETTERS H.O.F BY YOUR NAME IF YOU ARE NOT ELITE! You seem to think you're elite, Carlos. Guess it's time for me to check that card of yourself and find out one way or another just what class you belong to. Elite....or jabroni.
With a deadly fire in his eyes, Joey NOX pats Cornbread on the back and walks away from her. Cornbread gives NOX a look and then turns back to the camera, bringing back that plasticy smile to wrap this interview segment up.
Stacy Cornbread: Well you heard it from Joey NOX, folks! Remember to tune into Salvation to see whether Carlos Cruz can pick up the biggest win of his life or whether Joey NOX's return to the ring will be a successful one!
